Car is a 4200 manual. Had a run to Germany last week. Cruising at 80-100mph (not in the UK !) there was a very smooth transmission hum. Quite normal. Gradually, (over a 1000 miles or so) at about 40-60 mph I became aware of a droning and slight increase in vibration. I monitored the tone over different road surfaces, speeds, turning left or right. Thought maybe rear left wheel bearing was starting to "sing" but couldn't get the tone to change on left or right hand sharp bends (normal sort of test). The only time it varied was on undulations when the load was reduced over the "peaks" and it went quiet, just for a moment. Sometime ago someone had (perhaps) similar vibrations/noises when the bearing in the drive shaft/torque tube gave up..........I also remember pictures of the shaft on V blocks clocking the "bend" in the shaft. Haven't gone any further with the investigation yet eg checking wheel bearings etc but would like to read again the original fix on the torque tube - the worst case scenario ! Can't find it. Any idea where it is ? Anyone accessed rear wheel bearings........can it be got at by removing the brake disc/handbrake drum or does the half shaft have to come out ?
