SportsMaserati.com has invited us to start an "oil recommendations" thread here... so if you would like any oil advice or a recommendation for your car please feel free to ask here and we will get back to you as soon as we can.

To help us to give the most accurate advice possible we do need some information about your car. e.g.
Make:
Model:
Year:
Engine type:
Performance modifications:
Driving style: (road / off-road / track etc)
Any other information that may be relevant: e.g. approx BHP if modified, oil temps if known
What recommendation are you looking for? Engine, Gearbox, Diff etc.

Any oil we recommend is available to buy from us (if you would like to) for delivery throughout the UK and many destinations in Europe. We stock oils & lubricants from 9 major oil brands: Amsoil, Castrol, Fuchs, Gulf, Millers, Mobil, Motul, Redline and Silkolene, so we can supply fluids meeting the vast majority of manufacturer and international specifications.

SportsMaserati.com members get a discount of at least 10% on our usual prices... just choose "SportsMaserati.com" as your club when registering on the Opie Oils web site and enter your forum username.

Finally, if there are any products we don't stock and you have difficulty getting hold of elsewhere, let us know and we'll see if we can stock them.

We look forward to being of help!

Cheers
Guy, Opie Oils

You can also contact us by phone on +44 1209 215164

Guy,

When laying up your car for its winter break, or longer, at what age would you advice putting fresh oil in, or should you keep your old oil in?

Hello Peter,

The 2006 Quattroporte owners manual mentions this on pages 231/2. ( I don't know what the Maserati hand books stipulate for other models.) It suggests changing the engine oil and filter before restarting the engine after a long period of inactivity..... Interestingly this is not the process recommended by manufacturers when laying up marine engines for the winter. They suggest draining and refilling the engine with fresh oil and replacing the filter as part of the winterisation. The thoery being that the contaminated oil is flushed away thus leaving clean oil remaining in contact with internal surfaces.

Regards,

Paul

There is no real rule of thumb to this, it depends on a few things. What oil it is (quality will make a difference), how long it has already been in there, what kind of use the oil has had, how long is it going to be layed up etc. But say everything is in the middle ground then no harm in laying the car up with used oil then a fresh change when the car comes back out to play would be just fine.

Adam,

For the engine a good 5w-40 synthetic is ideal for all year round use. Loads to choose from here http://www.opieoils.co.uk/c-656-5w-40.aspx Pretty much a case of how good do you want to go and how much are you ready to spend on oil?

The diff is fed by the gearbox oil, and the gearbox takes a 75w-90 if is the six speed or do you have the Sequential gearshift system Cambiocorsa ?

Adam, all the fluids specs are in the owners handbook, I think people on the board go with using the same brand etc even if its been up-dated and then superceded by the latest spec.....which Maserati can recommend, amybe ask at your local franchise/indie specialist to be sure.

Hi Wayne

I would use a 5w-40 synthetic. 0w-40 are fine as well, but there aren't many to pick from and are quite expensive. 10w-40 offers less cold start protection than a 5w-40.

http://www.opieoils.co.uk/c-656-5w-40.aspx

Out of those, the best ones are the Fuchs/Silkolene Pro S, Millers CFS/CFS NT, Motul 300V, Red Line and Gulf Competition. The Motul 8100 X-Cess, Millers XF Longlife, Fuchs GT1 XTL/Supersyn, Gulf Formula G, Shell Helix and Mobil Super 3000 are good, cheaper alternatives.

Handy information Tim, thanks..!! So the top line are considered the best, the bottom line are 2nd best and cheaper..??
For here we also need to add on the 10w60 for the 3200 users..!! Maybe make up a list of: 1. Best, 2. 2nd best..??
Where does Shell Helix Ultra fit in to the lists, or such as Mobil 1..??

The ones I mentioned as the best options are the ester based performance oils. I should really have mentioned Amsoil as a good option between the top ones and cheaper ones, but it's expensive due to the cost of getting it from the US.

I wouldn't offer a list of 1st, 2nd, 3rd best etc oils as firstly the oil companies would get upset and secondly, it wouldn't be fair. Out of the top oils I mentioned, it would be unfair to say one is better than the others as when they are used in the real world, they all give very good results.

Shell Helix is a good, cheaper option. It's not a proper performance oil and doesn't meet the latest manufacturer specs, but it's a good road oil for things that don't need the latest specs.

With the 10w-60s, I'd still go with the Fuchs Pro S, Gulf Competition, Millers CFS/CFS NT and Red Line as the best options. The others listed via the link below are also good oils, but they aren't proper performance oils.

Thanks Tim, I did not mean rate each oil in the named list, I just meant:

1. These listed here are considered the best oils.
2. These listed here are god but not as good and considered 2nd best

Sorry I was a bit confusing..!!
