Oil filters

Now, I know the majority are going to say 'always use OE' but this came up on my ebay search and I wondered what peoples thoughts on it are? especially due to the cost difference. I regard Febi /Bilstein as a reputable co, surely they are not going to sell something that is not up to oem spec?

Playing devils advocate here OEMs don’t always use the best available often it’s the best deal they can get or local suppliers. I wouldn’t use use a cheap Chinese copy but with a reputable company like bilstein you would have some recourse in the event of product failure. Also oil technology has moved on in past 20 years so I would certainly use the best available regardless of recommendations from the past.

I had A PPI done on a GT I was hoping to buy this summer. It was found to have an IVECO truck oil filer fitted.

Yes it had the non-return valve as per spec, but to me it shouted 'maintained on a shoestring' vibe and contributed significantly to my decision to walk away.

Agree with you on that but it’s a different question. Personally I’m happy to work on my car for minor fixes but would prefer to maintain the service history with a reputable independent but say at some point in the future OEM filters become NLA then I’m sure we’d be fine using bilstein.

Febi Bilstein certainly a top brand and well known for their oe suspension components didn't know they were doing filters I wonder if they are European made or from the Far East ?

I agree , and they may be better than oe spec, but should I get engine issue down the line I'd kick myself a little as part of me would think it was the oil filter however unlikely

trouble is from my own experience on ebay, a lot of the supposedly branded parts are actually cheap fake copies from china, personally i would stick with buying from either euro car parts and if not available then main dealer, a lot of these things are simply rebranded by main dealer and then they stick 200 to 300% mark up, example BMW x5 4.6is have Mann oil filters fitted that are simply rebranded for BMW with the BMW logo, from euro car parts the Mann filter is virtually half the price.

To be honest, there is no recourse in the event of a failure either way. You would need to prove somehow in the event of an engine luncheon that the filter caused it. Which it probably didn’t.

Is there likely any significant difference between OEM and an another brand? No.

Would I buy an oil filter for my Maserati on eBay? Not a chance, for the reason above. The risk is quite low, the the consequences are quite high.

OEM is actually made by Purflux, and I actually have 2 in stock as have bought several over the years from people selling surplus stock on after they have got rid of the car, just thought it was interesting as have never seen anything other than oem listed for this engine before, would I use one? probably if desperate, and as I do all my own servicing my service history (everything gets recorded in a service book) is probably worthless except to a true enthusiast.

I would like to put one next to a genuine Purflux and see how they compare.
I also have 4 genuine in stock here for the day I can get another Coupé.
