Oil syringe?

Well, when I topped up my oil I put too much in. Rather than the hassle of jacking it up draining some out checking the level(not easy as the dipstick comes out smeared all the time) finding its wrong jacking it up again...

I heard you can use these syringes to suck small quantities out. Has anyone tried these and do they actually work? It would certainly save me a load of time!

I have a small hand pump that i got for filling the gearbox as its so difficult to get at. it looks some thing like that and yes it works. I think when you are trying to suck rather than pump there is a limited height you can pull from, but i think it should work. and yes i can just see the after hours crew demolishing this thread with innuendo any minute now!!!

Either that, or an old bike pump and a long length of clear tubing like you get on screen wash systems, cheap alternative, you might have to turn the gasket in the pump though..!!
As one after hours to another, I would not dream of taking anything out of context....just yet..!!

With in-board marine engines both partial and complete oil changes are effected through attachment of a pump (available from the chandlery) to the dip stick tube.

That was the idea of the clear tube, you stop before you see the oil get in to the pump, then discharge it..!!

It was a frustrating morning. I decided to use the conventional method in the end. I jacked the car up on to axle stands, removed undertray(bet this will be fun putting back on my own lying on my back). Then I hit a problem, the sump plug is one of those that I do not have a tool for. As I have no other car I had to lower the car to go and get the tool.

Before I jack the car up again does anyone know what size hex socket I need? I bought a set that goes up to 12mm which was the largest they had.

Don't know mate, I think you can maybe still buy the sump plug spanner, which has 2, or 3 sizes on them usually in one tool, I know it will be more than 12mm..!! You will find some on eBay, or at your local motorists shop usually..!! Have you measured it..??

The 12mm should do the trick, otherwise you will hear me screaming tomorrow morning!
