Drained and sorted now, though managed to get the oil run down my sleeve, oil over my jeans and the drive!

That's good, I was feeling very incompetent

I used a clear plastic suction syringe bought from an auto shop and a length of clear pvc tubing to suck out excess oil through the dipstick hole. The tubing needs to be thin enough to get deep down. It was nearly impossible to suck the oil when it was cold. Warmed the engine up (which was needed any way to check the oil level) and things became a lot easier. Was able to remove about a pint in half an hour with only a few drops spilt. Need to be careful of the hot oil though!
