ominous engine noise

Dear All,

First of all Happy New Year and sorry for not being active recently.

I find myself returning in rather unfortunate circumstances. I need to pick your collective brains for advice on what's happened with my car this evening.

I drove about 100 miles this evening and left with everything fine, though I did get a whiff of a strange smell when I started the car up. I paid it no mind and drove off. I didn't really notice anything strange till I left the motorway and the speed dropped. Then I noticed that the engine was burbling and juddering slightly, basically out of balance. When I put my foot on the gas, it sounded clearly like not all of the cylinders were firing. I pulled in at a petrol station and indeed the engine sounded rough at tickover, in fact I could feel a rhythmic vibration through the seat. I continued home and made it, though the sound seemed to get a little worse and the smell from the engine was there too.

A little information that may help: This is a 2002 4200 GT with 35,000 miles on the clock. The car has been serviced on time, every time and all fluids are as they should be and none seem to be leaking, at lease not from below. The car feels fine in terms of steering, brakes and suspension but I'm down on power and clearly firing on less than 8 cylinders.

Now, does anyone have any ideas? I'm scared even to drive to the Maserati dealer in the morning, for fear of making the problem worse. It's only a 4 mile journey but something serious may be wrong.

Your sage advice as always would be most welcome.

Well we have to assume your firing on 7 so I would say you have a coil that has gone. Not a massive job but the most likely cause. It might be wise to just make sure all the plug leads are on ok.

This would probably not put the engine light on.

Hi Matt,

Thanks for your advice. I forgot to mention that the engine light did indeed not come on and temp, oil pressure etc. are normal. I'll check the plug leads in the morning for sure and hope it is indeed a coil that's gone.

Am I safe to drive the 4 miles do you think, assuming it's what you say it is?

Worst that can happen is it might throw a Lamda light , due to the unburnt fuel getting pumped out , my guess if that was going to happen it would have done it by now , so i would risk the drive to the dealer , Lumpy engine at idle or speed is definately fuel or ignition , so logical way test all the coil packs first , if they are all working a 100% then possible blocked injector (but unlikely ) possible Maf sensor playing up worth giving it a clean , be helpful if you could isolate which bank is causing the lumpyness

Yes should be fine to drive it. You can always pull coil pack / plug leads one by one and you can work out which one has gone as pulling a working one will make the engine run even worse. When you find the one that makes no difference you will have found the culprit.

Good luck

A dodgy coil prompted the CEL on my 3200. Whatever you do, keep a wary eye on the oil pressure and water temperature as you don't want to tempt fate.

Hi All,

So the good news is it was a coil that had gone. They didn't have one in stock so they kindly lent me one from a 360 CS racer (my local dealer also has a CS race team) and will order the part on Monday. I'm lighter by a small amount of cash but lighter still by the enormous relief of finding that all is well again.

The mechanics told me that in every other way the car is in fine form and also loved the sound of the Larini, something they'd never heard out in Budapest. I keep wavering and wondering whether to go for a later model and for a cambiocorsa in the spring but then again, with mine being so reliable (currently 16,500 miles without a single significant failure, touch wood) maybe I'm better just caring for this one and staying put.

By the way there was a 458 in for service in a right state. I can't believe how some people don't care for their cars. There should be a rule that anyone who treats such beautiful cars poorly should have them confiscated and then donated to folk like us who'd do them proud.

Yep, just did a 500km round trip this weekend, hence the need for the loaner coil and all is still well. Can't wait for the spring, back on summer rubber and with the planned full detail done to bring him back to his former shining glory.
