Original 4200 Exhaust Backboxes

It occurs to me that, having sold my 4200 with custom exhausts on it, I still have the original Maserati back-boxes sitting in my garage. They are 9 years old, with 40,000 miles of use over about 5 1/2 years. So I'm wondering if they have any value? Clearly to buy them new from Maserati would cost a fortune, but I'm not sure that translates to these ones being worth much, or does it?

They seem to be costly on ebay, but since they (I am given to understand) simply don't fail there's not a lot of market.

Might I be able to persuade you to swap with mine if I get yours gutted? Just so I keep mine on the road?

Ive seen them for as little as 150 US on up to 4 and 500 or more each. But as chris mentioned theres not much market for them so if u wanna sell them id keep it low. I paid 150 for mine last year and gutted out one of the baffles on each one.

Larry, how much difference did that make? I really do feel under exhausted after Silverstone, but really *really* can't justify wodges of cash right now.

I recall Matt was looking for a set to adapt as he has already done to the GS systems.

We can get you an SM X-pipe fitted for £250. If you are interested or just want a chat about exhausts, pm me a contact number and I'll give you a bell.

Cheers Benny

I was under the impression that the X-pipe wouldn't make that much difference....

Taking some baffles from a back box strikes me as quicker and possibly cheaper, but I'm prepared to be corrected.

The X-pipe does give an increase in volume and makes the pops and crackles more pronounced. Check out the 'SportsMaserati exhaust modification guilde' [sic]. It gives a video representation of the various configurations. Be aware that revving at idle doesn't give the full picture of sound under load, but an X-pipe is a good, and relatively cheap, place to start.

It made a difference to where im happy with my exhaust....i removed one of the two baffles in side each muffler. And also removed most of the packing. Now my exhaust with the x pipe is louder but no tubi louder. No drone either

AH ok, so you have an x-pipe as well.

Benny looks like it has to be done. Just needs some man maths.

How long do they take to arrive, and are they hard to get fitted?

Good man! If you give me a bell over the weekend I can fill you in with all the details.

Up to my eyes. And the car is going in for MOT and service next week, pre Modena run, so I'll see what the final bill is before I make up my mind :)

You just have to get it done for the Modena trip. Going through all those tunnels and Alpine passes with a standard exhaust will be soul destroying. ;)

You're *not* helping :)

Wheels first. New tyres required at the back. Everything else is cheap cosmetically (airbag again, rattle from one of the poppers on the fuse box, co-pilot Italy, breakdown cover that sort of stuff)

So it *really* depends on what needs doing next week (and a lot of man maths since I've just paid for my speakers) :D
