Greeting Suffolkers.

Mrs Catman and I fancy a night away towards the end of March. Suffolk has provide some pleasure in the past, so seems like a fair idea.

Anyone recommend a gastro stylee pub with rooms or similar? Good beer, good food, somewhere clean to sleep and big breakfast. Oh, and somewhere to park the Maser are all we require.

TIA

:)

It depends which bit of Suffolk you fancy.

Have a look at The Angel Inn in Wangford It's quite small, but the beer and food are good, rooms nice and the locals are friendly. Location wise, it's 40 min up the A12 from Ipswich and about 20 min from Lowestoft and only two min from the A12.

There isn't much else in the village in the way of night life, but it's a nice area to explore during the day (Southwold 15 min). I'm not sure what they do entertainment wise these days, but they do have live music in there occasionally at weekends.

If you get up this way, give me a shout if you want to meet up for coffee and cake somewhere.

Yep Southwold is about as far as we'd want to go. Looks lovely, ta.
Would be great to grab coffee!

Are you set on the coast, C? There's little to beat Southwold if you can ignore the banker weekend retreat / retirement overspill - house prices are laughable but it's pretty genteel. The Adnams brewery and fine food makes it pretty attractive, though. Or give Walberswich just over the river a go. Aldeburgh is nice, too; the Cross Keys is a fine pub and it boasts two fantastic fish and chips shops, but I've never stayed in the town. I'm sure it has some good places. If a good walk is your thing then Dunwich offers beautiful heathland and a hard yomp up a deep shingle beach, under the watchfull gaze of Sizewell nuclear power station. Further inland, Lavenham is beautiful. The Angel does great food (well, it always used to... haven't been for a few years) and has rooms. Parking is limited but safe as houses on the square outside.

I'll get my thinking cap on regarding places to stay. We tend to just barrel up for an afternoon yomp, fish and chips and a pint so I'm a bit dim when it comes to hotels and pubs with rooms.

Thanks, Adam. Not set on the coast at all. We spent a few days in Southwold last summer and it is, indeed, very pleasant with many fine pubs. Ditto Walberswick. And great seafood on the harbour (with *three* Maseratis at Saturday lunchtime)

I'd be happy enough to stay at the Swan, in honesty :)

This was in the Times today, C. One of the top 50 B&Bs in the country.

West Stow Hall, near Bury St Edmunds, Suffolk
This stunning Tudor house and garden shout: “Explore me.” There’s a full-sized steam engine in the drive, and Monty, the owner’s border collie cross, will take children around the six acres of woods, orchards and gardens. Two out of the four bedrooms work well together for families. The perfect scenario is to take one enormous double room, with an amazing Tudor-beamed bathroom that connects to a cute panelled twin.
Details One B&B double with a twin costs from £160 (01284 728127, weststowhall.com)
