Its the remains of the padding those stupid Italians put behind to keep the water out....soaks it up like a sponge then rots it out.

You would have thought they would have learnt from filing Alfa Sud sills with expanding foam back in the 70's!!!

At least it's an easy fix with a good squirt of wax oil once welded up.
