Tell me about it. When I did my 1st solo flight the RAF airfield on my route denied me permission to fly over. Had to turn West and box it. Somehow I managed to get to Beverley.
Unplanned diversion was and still is part of the nav/skills test.

5 brothers in the merchant marine (all Blue Star) - 3 deck and 2 engineers in the 70’s. Two are back teaching old school stuff in Nautical College. I’ll bet my fid (3ft) is bigger than your marlinspike :)

Just finished reading the account of the recent locating of Shackleton’s Endurance and the expedition - Frank Worsley’s impressive navigation -22+ chronometers on the ship but his trusted one kept inside his shirt.
I also spent the first 12 years of my merchant navy career in Blue Star (deck) , small world.

The Ashton brothers - Andrew, Philip, David, Dominic & Tim. My job was usually delivering or collecting them, often with, let’s say accompanying goods of one kind or another….
