Pistonheads Ghilbi Review

Mixed indeed. On one level it was a 'fair', albeit quite short, review as it looked at it as a.n.other car. But, my two issues are really:

i) why does a 4 door saloon need to perform on a track!? Obviously this is a much wider issue than a Ghilbi review, but is by and large irrelevant for 99.5% of people
ii) it doesn't account for the 'Maserati' factor. It was a bit strange reading some of the comments below about jumping straight to a Jag instead for similar money, as though it would be that much 'better' or a much more obvious choice.

I actually think with an ambition of 3000 units in the UK, it is quite achievable - if they can get people to look behind your bog-standard German box.

Harry's was brilliant and really made me sit up and notice the Ghibli for what it is.......A Maserati that can be used every day..

I guess some of the "would prefer a Jag" type comments are based on a perception of Maseratis as being high risk, high depreciation. The market will be slow to educate. I'll try and swing by Lancaster at the weekend and see one up close and personal. I like them. Bags more style than a generic comparable German car, from what I can tell.

No. I prefer the look and noise of mine. But if I was after a daily commuter or a family car with more space in the back and the boot then the Ghibli would probably be ideal. And if I ever turned up by car at business meetings it would be a bit less shouty than the GTS. I could even make it within two miles before anyone knew I was on my way.

It's an awful review. It's far too short and does not address any of the real world circumstance that a smaller manufacturer has to face in order to compete with the established players. I have no doubt that Maserati will continually tweak the car and after 2-3 years they will have honed and fine tuned it. The QP is a good example of the evolution as is the GS in some ways. It's not even well written or researched.

Of course, I am not level in the discussion but really, what we have is an evocative manufacturer trying to jump up the sales levels and attract a wider audience. Of course, it's not an M5 as it would be virtually impossible to better that car with the scope that Maserati has. What it is is a **** good start and a market choice that we all should be pleased exists.

If you look at the 4C Top Gear review at least they managed to understand that the flaws will be largely overlooked and we should be thankful that Alfa is having a go again after an up and down 20 years or so. Pistonheads should really be offering a more comprehensive and varied review, I am continually disappointed in their direction over the last wee while, this review is only the tip of the iceberg.

I post there quite often and have noticed that they are falling into the Top Gear trap which is to become complacent and clouded just because they are popular.

I hope that there are more like us who choose with their heart and their individuality. Time will tell.

The comments are often driven by dreamers which is fine except it's easy to say "I'd rather have the Jag" or "I'd have a 2nd hand M3 and a 530D for the kids" when they are not in a position to make those kind of choices.

I think the lease values being quite reasonable is the most telling thing. That points to the funders being confident in residuals. And it is good residuals that make a difference, not whether a car can lap the Nurburgring well or whether the rear is too plain for some.

Rant over!!! :)

More subtle for business, the GTS is more flash.....never thought of it

Harry's review is a lot more familiar to me than the Pissedinthehead review. A lot of the generic 'I prefer Jags' and 'I prefer German cars' comments are to be expected in a segment that is as competitive as this one but some are just plain ignorant. I don't spend a lot of time on there and that's one of the reasons why. Some people just don't get the Maserati aura, but that's fine as they can stick to buying typical, soulless German barges.

The worse the reviews the faster the depreciation, then I can afford one sooner rather than later.

Every cloud and all that.

Funny I watched Harry's review only yesterday, I thought it was a good one.
Shame Harry didn't do a proper terrestrial car TV show!

Harry is not showy and I like his reviews simply because he is extremely thorough and addresses everything that is important when talking cars.

All that matters is what buyers in that market think, not PH fanboys. Some of the comments are hilarious, for instance an Audi A6 owner saying that Autotrader is littered with QP's for little money. Has he noticed A6 depreciation?

Not a great way to end a review....A missed opportunity........Read Ben's review on here as he is in the real world.

This is exactly what I had before mine. I had a more or less new A6 quattro and after about 6mths realised how dull and soulless it was. Even the Mrs - who's not a big car nut, but is accepting of me and my son's obsession - agreed and quite readily accepted the need to change to something a 'little' :saifi3: more exciting. Hence, the GT purchase (ok quite a bit more exciting!) - and a semi-shed Subaru - although that has gone and been replaced with a Volvo S60. Difference between that and the Audi in terms of look & feel is very noticeable - the Polestar performance pack of course helps, but you feel something with the car, unlike the German barges. NEVER again will I go in that direction. And I can see a year or two down the line that the next family car could quite easily be a Ghibli (oh, apologies for they typo in the Thread title - couldn't work out how to change it - Doh!).

It would seem that a lot of us have been down the same route at some point BigR, buy German because you think it's the thing to do and then you realise it isn't..!!
Don't worry about the thread title, I could not figure out how to edit it either..!!

The way I see it, why would I buy a far more expensive Ghibli.......when I could buy the last shape QP GTS with significant change to spare, have a far better looking car and the best V8 soundtrack in the world????

Saw the Ghibli last week, it was a deisel with a good (not epic) exhaust note......maybe one for 4-5 years time when they've had a massive hit on depreciation.
