Prop shaft

On the way from Le-Mans ( after a fault less trip) just outside of ferry port the car started to vibrate at different speeds. When I slowed down at the junction and the pulled away I had a Bad vibration in the car mainly from the gearstick. I pulled into the car park before boarding the ferry but could not see any problems under the car. There was also a metallic clicking noise from under the car. I loaded the car on the Ferry and called the recovery company to say I would be in Southampton at 7.30am and would need the car recovered to my home. I thought it felt like a Prop shaft UJ problem but was not willing to take a chance. The AA picked the car up off the ferry and I jumped in with one of the other lads. The car came home the next morning but when I got it off the truck the noise and vibration had gone!!!!
I took the car to work at the weekend to check it on the ramp. After driving for about 5 mins the clicking noise started again and a slight vibration. With the car on the ramp and the rear wheels off the ramp I started it and put it into drive. The noise was coming from the centre CV type joint from the prop shaft and when the car was stopped you could move the prop shaft with your hand and hear the clicking noise. I took the car home and removed the Prop shaft. The centre CV joint had lost its grease and bearing were rusty. I telephoned Mario to ask if he had a replacement. He got back to me the next day but told me they were only sold as a complete prop shaft and were £1000.00. I sent mine to a local Prop shaft/driveshaft manufacturer but as yet not had a rely from them. It was all going well when I went with it until he asked what it was off, then when I said Maserati there was a sharp intake of breath. Hopefully I will get it back by the weekend all done and not too expensive but if not has any member a second hand unit they want to sell?? There is a couple on Ebay but I would rather buy from someone in the Forum.

Hi a bit of good news, I received my propshaft back today, they replaced the CV joint, replaced the rear UJ balanced and sprayed it satin black. Total cost of rebuild was £170.00. Should get it back on the car by Saturday as long as all goes well. While the prop was off I cleaned the transmission tunnel and gave it a good coat of Tectyl protective coating (a type of Waxoyl).2014-07-03 15.43.04.jpg2014-07-03 15.43.29.jpg2014-07-03 15.43.11.jpg

Great to know there is an alternative way to sort this out. Not sure if there is anyone could do this locally at the lace we live.

It was CPS Drivelink, 190 kingsway South, Team Valley Trading Estate, Gateshead, Tyne & Wear, NE11 0SH. Tel: 0191 4821690. If any one wanted there Prop done if you send it to me I would take it to them and then ship it back to you when its done. They may do it by posting it to them but check price first as I got mine done as a Trade job so it may be more expensive as a normal customer.

Well done Ed, we did see you a coupe of times in Le Mans, you where heading out of Arnage high street and down to the track....we were in the bar on the corner of the roundabout.

We did shout but you were obviously having too much fun.,

A few more quid saved too, thanks for the info.

Hi !
I encounter a same issue, but different origin :
Older dealer make a bad work when he replace complete clutch. He broked a fixation on guibo-propshaft, and to solve then, he weld a nut on.
But in he's small head, i didn't think add a weight on prop shaft is a BAD IDEE. Not turn round...
I get a 40K Prop shaft from ebay, with a new guibo on them for 230£ .

In 2 or 3 weeks, i dismount exaust and replace old bad prop shaft for the new part...

Hi sorry I missed you, if I had been better prepared I should of asked on the forum who was going and got some contact details as I would of liked to meet up with others as there is nobody in the North East that I know of. Had a great time at Le-Mans again, a few more people there this year as it was very busy. Thanks Edd

Hi Ed,

Did you check the car at higher speeds yet?
The shafts are balanced at the car during production and finebalancing is done by adding rings under the bolts at the flanges of the diff.
When i had the GTA, a slight drone could still be felt at higher speeds.
After balancing the shaft at the car, vibrations finally came to an end.
Curious to hear if yours was drone free from the start!

Hi a up-date on my Prop problems. Had the car out today and all was well. Even at Motorway speed (and a little above) there was no noise, vibration or any other problems. I will put it on the ramp at the weekend and check all bolts/fixings are tight, just in case. Hopefully I should now be able to enjoy it in the coming weeks before the weather turns again.
