Hi, the battery on my QP has died and I need to swap it out for a new one. Has anyone here done this before as I was wondering if you need to remove the boot trim to get the battery out. The access hole seems a bit tight and though it might be easier to remove the full trim so nothing gets damged swapping them over. Any other tips welcome,

thanks

Hi Simon,

Emblem Sports Cars replaced mine for me. To avoid damage they removed the panel before removing the battery. You should also know that there is an unusual connector block on one of the terminals.

Paul

Hi,
I guessed so, the battery will be quite heavy and I guess easy to damage the trim if it ends up resting on the edge. My car is in my garage and immobile, seems the battery dropped off a cliff in the last few weeks since I last used the car. Already had a look around that black box, using a mirror I can see the nut that secures it all down.

The battery from Eurospares is approx £177, how much did Emblem charge for a swap over?

thanks

Simon,

My battery was replaced back in May, 2011. It was a Bosch and it cost around £100 plus VAT. Part No. S4013 refers. Emblem also checked for a drain on the system and alternator output. The labour costs involved a call out to my home address so I cannot give you a precise figure for fitting alone. However I would have thought that one hours labour would cover it. This battery was replaced with an identical unit recently under warranty.

Paul

Hi, ended up getting a Bosch Silver from Halfords for £130 , 100Ah and 820CA. Will fit tomorrow.

One surprising thing was that the exisiting battery had been on a trickle charger and the car was driven about 3 weeks ago without problem. Within that time (I imagine when it went really cold) the battery went off a cliff. It had gone so low it couldn't even power the electrics for the dash etc continually. The sat nav wanted a code and Navtrak called me to say the power had been off so it couldn't even power the basics.

Will initially try to replace without removing trim.

Hi Simon, it might be worth taking the old battery to Land Rover main dealer who have battery recovery equipment. They resurected one of mine that did the same. One day ok, the next it wouldn't even unlock the car, They charge about a tenner if they can restore it.

Hi guys,
just started to change the battery and undone the terminals but that black box on the positive terminal won't shift. There is a red tab with two screws that go through into the battery and they've been removed but it still won't budge. Have Maserati used double sided tape to hold this in position? The original battery has screw holes for this purpose but my replacement has none, how have you guys got around this?

Can leaving the car unpowered for a few hours cause problems with the engine management? There's a code card with my documents and just wondered when this was required?

Thanks for the tip Barrie, why do Land Rover do this vs other dealers?

thanks

EDIT - levered off the red tab which has rawplug type protrusions that fit inside the battery. Also found the holes in the Bosch replacement, they have the holes but in the handle!

Hi Simon,

Range Rovers have a habit of draining batteries for no apparent reason, that's apart from the alternator deciding to cook itself on the odd occassion killing the battery in the process so..............they have a way of ressurecting a totally f...ed battery or at least trying. might be worth a try and if successful could be a stand by.

Having said all that I have one of these fitted and it works a like a dream. Worth the 40 quid. CTEK MXS 3.6 3.8A 12V Multi-Functional 4-Stage Car Battery Charger

Hi, I have a trickle charger that the main dealer gave me when I got the car. Seems the battery was the original so hasn't done too bad for 7years or so. It was pretty awkward to remove and I ended up half getting in the boot to lift it out. To protect the trim I placed a few old telephone directories next to the hatch to take the weight.

Asked my father about resurrecting a dead battery and he said they might just isolate the one bad cell with copper wire so the battery works again although with a lower voltage.

What if you left your QP backed up against the garage wall and the battery fully died like this one did? Depending on the width of the garage it might be physically impossible to access the battery let alone swap it out. According to a tech at the main dealer there is some way to make the gearbox go into neutral using a special tool so the car can then be pushed. The recovery guys have these so they can winch the cars onto a trailer.
