Quattroporte Front Brake Pads

I have had new Maserati discs fitted with EBC premium yellow stuff pads all round. They have not yet had time to bed in but at the moment the front pads squeal painfully. The EBC pads cost £96 (front) compared with £692.71 if obtained from Maserati. No doubt they will be 10% or so less from Eurospares. I would have chosen Ferodo as a quality alternative but as far as I know they don't currently supply a Quattroporte version. Has anyone had a good experience with non original pads on the QP? Thanks.

Paul

Hi Paul,
I have used EBC Red Stuff, but never yellow. The Maserati pads are priced at a stupid level, they don't make brake pads..?? They are expensive but Pagid pads are excellent and seem to wear very well. Ferodo have some very good reports and some members swear by them.
I assume the new discs were correctly cleaned after being fitted, they do have a coating on which should be cleaned off before use..??
Cheers

who fitted the pads? and do you know if shims were used? ebc typically supply rubber pad.shimss which sit between the caliper and pad to prevent squeeling.

they should also be greased where they make contact with the caliper as dry contact will cause squeeling.

Worth checking with whoever fitted them.

Thanks for your comments. The discs and pads were fitted by independant Maserati specialists Emblem. They do recommend fitting original Maserati equipment but will fit pattern parts if customers specify this. Apparently Maserati pads come with new shims. The yellow stuff did not. They road tested the car both with and without shims on the front calipers (taken from the original pads) and coated the back surfaces with copper grease. The result however was identical. For some reasond they couldn't fit the shims on the rears. I would be very suprised if the discs were not prepared correctly. I will discuss the issues raised. Thank you.

Robert,

Further to my last. If you have details of part numbers and suppliers of Ferodo / Pagid pads I would be glad to have these as a possible solution. Thanks.

some people shy away from copper grease as it can contaminate the pads if used in the wrong places. I doubt this is what's happened though. Almost every time I have had brake squeel on any car it has been resolved with rubberized heat resistant shims placed between the pad and caliper piston or liberal coats of copper grease where the pads meet the caliper. Could be worth getting them pulled apart and rebuilt, should take too long either.

ive got EBC yellows fitted to my 159 and they are a pi$$ poor pad. Performance is cr@p to say the least, havnt used the Red, but id not recommend EBC on any performance car.
i use Ferodo on my mongrel 156 if they can stop that thing then would be great on the QP.
also u may well find that the Ferodo are the pad supplied in the factory (just OME ones under another name) my Brembo pads on the 159 were Ferodo under the label of Brembo.

Hi JDM

I spoke with EBC this morning. They are sending me the shims you describe. Fingers crossed.

good work, now make sure you don't get charged loads of labour to fit them, it should be a 20 minute job all in

Let's hope all works out for you and you lose the squeel..!!

Dave-CT, the EBC Reds being ceramic are pretty good, no fade and plenty of bite, just what you need to stop..??

i think a few people on here can say how bad my brakes were at Llandow massive fade, to the point of almost total loss of brakes and a HUGE amount of smoke,
that said i have Not used the Reds but i personally will not be using any EBC pads again.

Dave,
You have to go with what you think will work for you. The Pagid are an arm and a leg, but they are excellent and they last. Have not used Ferodo, but loads rave about them on here. Disc cooling has a big bearing on the pads too, vented, drilled, grooved, they all do their bit, what did you have..??
Cheers

i just run vented, i do run grooved and vented on the 156 though.
i am trying to decide between the Pagid pads and discs and Ferodo pads brembo G3 discs on my next change, havent decided yet though,
used the 3G discs before and hold them in high standing.

Brembo Discs are good, I have used vented, grooved and drilled, I find the grooved are noiser than vented and drilled. Pads I think you have to go with both what you like and what others have experience of. I have Pagid on the 3200 and they were terrific on the hard drive across France. The 4200 I think has OE Maserati, which I am not sure if that means Brembo, or Ferodo, I think they will be Brembo.

I had the 3M shims fitted today and I am sorry to say that it didn't make any difference to the squeal. I am therefore looking at alternatives. Does anyone have any knowledge or experience of Formula Dynamics pads? They list a number of products for the QP.

Hi Paul,
I ran the FD Fast Road pads on my QP...
My impressions:
- Very quiet (certainly no noisier than OEM) and mine did not squeal,
- Just as good stopping power (I would say no better than OEM),
- They did not have the sensor wire,
- My impression is they do not last as long as OEM,
- Very good value.
Looks like the range has changed since I purchased mine, I am sure they were called fast or performance road (or something similar),
now they have Quiet / Low Dust / Extended Wear Street Brake Pads and Carbon / Kevlar Performance Street Brake Pads,
Regards,
Enzo.

Thanks Dave. I could only find one set of Ferodo pads specfically marketed for the Quattroporte front caliper. (Telephone enquiries made with Ferodo suppliers Opie Oils) Curiously these were intended for an armoured version of the QP! There can't be many of these cars in the world yet alone the UK.
