Question of the day

I've just 'wikied' the space shuttle and I have grounds for dispute; the shuttle flies, has an inboard engine (although it's not that relevant) and carries at least one person and therefore, it's an aircraft. It re enters at Mach 25 at 400,000 ft plus so beats the X-15 into a cocked hat. Just a thought.

I'm not sure that the shuttle re-entry can be classed as powered flight...

There is a lot of argument about the worlds longest river so that is not the question but what is the shortest river?

The question wasn't which is the fastest or highest flying plane but "An aircraft achieved a record speed of 4,520 mph / Mach 6.70 and achieved a record height of 108,000 metres" although the Space Shuttle may have exceeded these records it doesn't answer the question

As the shuttle decelerated through Mach 6.7 and descended through 108,000 metres, it also fulfills the criteria of the question as it achieved both. I'm not going to die in a ditch over it, just thinking out loud.

Possibly some argument about the worlds shortest river as well. Both contenders are in the USA. One of them is called something stupid like "The River" My font of knowledge runs out at that point.

So does the "space" shuttle fly through our sky as an aeroplane within the atmosphere under it's own power and achieve the target speeds and height..?? I do not think it does..?? There will be no dying in ditches on my watch, but if you want a Gold Star for the argument you can have one..!!

The x-15 achieved the record as stated, that was the question not name an aircraft that can achieve it.
Anyway the Humber is pretty short for a river but are you being deceitful with your question and its either underground and your only counting the overground part or a 'river' in the human body or something?

There was no mention of own power or a date when these figures were achieved so, pedantically, the shuttle fulfilled the criteria every time it came back to earth. If the question was phrased as, in the 60s which aircraft achieved the world record of Mach 6.7 and 103,000 metres, it would be the X-15 as the shuttle wouldn't have fulfilled the criteria. Moving on.........

Not really as the question clearly state the world record if the Space Shuttle exceeded these stats it would be it's or any other record - keep on thinking aloud as you are normally far enough away ;)

Thats was what I thought until some smart **** advised that it had lost its record back in the late 80s

I pressume it may change subject to how much rainfall there has been. Shortest is something like 110 meters. Still cant remember its name.

Much as it pains me, I agree. Although I'd be interested at the speed / height it achieves on the way up (although I guess the height is the same, and speed = escape velocity). Records change as time passes.

Now about this river ;)

OK according to the records the Roe River is now shorter than the D River at some 200ft. There are others that claim to be shorter but to date they are yet to be recognised. I only know this as someone asked me this question the other day and I was sure I knew the answer was D River, almost cost me a pint :)

Some one else can have a go
