OK. Telecomms question, two parter

1) Was the fax invented before the telephone?
2) If so, how did it work?

I will only comment on answers which include both responses

I do know that the fax machine is one of very few major inventions that came out of Japan, as opposed to them taking someone else's and giving it their engineering perfection.

The Fax machine we know today was (because it should be consigned to history) a line scanner which digitised the picture and then electronically transmitted the data via telephone lines/satellite but mr C eludes to an earlier version...

I dont know enough to give a full answer. I know it was another Scottish invention and it predated the phone by 30 years or so. As to how it worked i have little idea but i would of thought it was some sort of electro mechanical device that printed dots to form the images transmitted over the telegraph system.

Following my own rules:
MLC is right as far as he goes
Dave R is very wrong :)

I shall say no more at this time

I'm not going to let this run as although I find it fascinating, it appears to have a relatively narrow appeal :)

The fax was indeed invented some 30 years ahead of the telephone. Originally they used syncrhonised pendulums where the document at the transmitting end was made with conductive ink. As the pendulum scanned down (in the manner of a TV) the current flowed through a telegraph cable to the receiver where it would effectively burn the image onto the document at the remote end.

I find that wonderfully elegant. YMMV

I think I shall hand to Kenny

Makes you wonder why it took so long to take off as a commercial device.

Seeing as its national Star Wars day. What was Harrison Fords job before auditioning for Star Wars and what was he doing when he was asked to audition by George Lucas ?

I tried one of those new wookiee burgers today. It was pretty good but just a bit chewy !
