I'm not going to let this run as although I find it fascinating, it appears to have a relatively narrow appeal
The fax was indeed invented some 30 years ahead of the telephone. Originally they used syncrhonised pendulums where the document at the transmitting end was made with conductive ink. As the pendulum scanned down (in the manner of a TV) the current flowed through a telegraph cable to the receiver where it would effectively burn the image onto the document at the remote end.
I find that wonderfully elegant. YMMV
