Question of the day

Given no-one got it quite right, I'm going to nominate Navcorr to set the next question as he knew that Chuck had done some carpentry with his father...

Only because a friend at school grew up in the most wonderful house. His Father is a cabinet maker and every peice of furniture, kitchen, staircase, etc was bespoke and beautiful. Amazing skills and he loved 50s RocknRoll too.

As questions have had a US flavour recently lets have some sport. Basketball and the NBA. In two parts, not unrelated, but not immediately obvious:
Why are the Los Angeles Lakers so called and
What is unusual about the Celtics & Knicks.

I actually think I might know the bit about the Lakers... when we lived in the US, I remember talking to some colleagues about why various basketball, ice hockey and football teams had the nicknames they had. Didn't the Lakers originally come from Minneapolis, which is nicknamed the City of Lakes?

Can't think of a similar point re the Celtics and the Knicks, but will have a think...

You are indeed correct Sir. The clue to the 2nd part is in the wording of the question. I like being mean. :hammer:

The only thing i can think of is they are both named after English towns or cities. Boston and York.

I know sod all about the american cough cough sports.

Sorry but incorrect. You have the correct cities - as before though this is less about the sport. The team names are not so important either in fairness. The two parts of the question should be considered in conjunction - with JonW's answer to the first part being helpful.

My guess is that both the Celtics (pronounced Sell-ticks) and Knicks (pronounced Nicks, short form of Knickerbockers) is that they are both shortened/mispronounced names.

That's an interesting thought but incorrect. The Knickerbockers did have an alternate form of the name in the 70s but not one to repeat amongst gentlemen.

Another clue, although it may be as much misdirecting, would be other team names. For example - Utah Jazz. You could ask yourself what has jazz got to do with Utah.

The answers offered so far give enough information to deduce.
Will be on the road shortly until late afternoon - will reveal then if necessary.

Catman is suspiciously silent - I suspect he knows

Actually he doesn't. Tuned out after the Netball comment ;)

Catman is probably in a different timezone... I'm out so I'll have a look on wiki.. but Utah Jazz would have been New Orleans Jazz or something. The Celtics are presently Boston, I think, unless they've moved recently and I don't think you could get more Kel-tick (sic) than Boston with it's large Oirish community so I'm not sure where they moved from. If you reveal all later then Stu would be closest.

Thought Catman might know given the time spent Stateside. MLC is correct about New Orleans being the original home of the Jazz.

As this one is maybe beginning to bore the good folk of SM here it is.

We know the Lakers moved, we know the Jazz moved. As have many others. What is unusual about the Celtics & Knicks - they are the only two original franchises that have never moved. They still play in their original cities.

I'm off to lick the wounds caused by the Netball comments - I am a big girls blouse after all :girly6:

Sorry chaps - busy day...

Ok, a nice simple question.

What was the first road legal production car to break 200mph?
