What about the Doctor chappie in Africa, Schweinsteiger or something oh no he was a half back
Schweitzer that's it - Albert
Somehow Germans and Peace Prizes don't fit together - no offence

Germans - Heinrich Hertz (cycles per second), Max Planck ( a regular fellow), Otto Hahn- they have streets named after him all in the field of fizzicks. Oh and some bloke called Albert Einstein... what ever became of him?

All great German scientists (Hahn was a Chemist, really), but sadly none of them won the Nobel Peace Prize.

Yes. And if you look in the box you will be able to see whether Catman will allow consolation prizes for multi-part or subsidiary questions or not. I predict not.

Now *that* is the Catman theory of indeterminacy. Which states 'The answer is whatever Catman decides at that time. Voiced predictions tend to encourage bias against the prediction if the indeterminate one feels the voicer is taking the ****' ;)

Albert Schweitzer was born in Alsace while it was part of Germany, and won the Peace Prize in 1952, although he was French by then.
Bastian Schweinsteiger is indeed German, but has yet to win a Nobel Prize.
Wes Schweitzer is an offensive guard, not a half back.

OK, I'm going to give a clue and then close this down tomorrow id nobody gets it.

There have been three Austrian Nobel Peace Prize winners.
Just two people, you have probably never heard of:
- an Austrian Jewish pacifist, publicist, journalist, and co-founder of the German peace movement; he won in 1911
- a Czech (part of Austria-Hungary) pacifist and novelist, and the first woman to win a Peace Prize, in 1905

And one 'Austrian' winner in 2005 that you might get.

Does anyone like the idea of a question of the day quiz thread. The idea being you post a question on any subject. Post an image to identify the object or car part or post part of a songs lyrics for the other members to guess. The person who gets the right answer then posts the next question. If we avoid google then it could be fun and keeps people coming back to the site. If a question doesnt get answered after 2 days then the answer is given and a new question is posed.

Here is one to start you off :-

Why are medicine balls called medicine balls ?

Ermmm. Can a mod change the thread title to question of the week. Seems more in keeping with the current trend rather than the original idea of the thread ! :ohh:

Arnie isn't the last one is he? He's the only person who I can guess as being 'Austrian' rather than plain old Austrian

When was the Hadron Collider finished? I thought that was in Switzerland, but it sprang (sprung?) to mind when I read the clue as it suggests the ‘Austrian’ in 2005 might not be a person....

The LHC crosses the French Swiss border but pretty sure it isn't large enough to take in Austria as well but the idea of it not being a person sounds good.

The only international agencies that I can think of promoting peace are the UN, WHO or the IAEA. The first two are based in US and Geneva respectively is the IAEA based in Austria? 2005 would be about the time that Iran was accused of developing nuclear weapons.

You just have to answer the question promptly, and then we can move on...... :)

Keeping on the same theme but trying to keep to the concept of QOD.

Everyone knows that Enola Gay dropped the first atomic bomb on Hiroshama but what was the name of the plane that dropped the second atomic bomb on Nagasaki?

They didn't give it a name.
Nah, sorry, I'm wrong about that, it did have a name.

I'm currently reading an peculiar novel about the bombings, Mr Two Bomb, which contains a horribly graphic account of the aftermath in Hiroshima.
https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/9015251-mr-two-bomb
The main character says "I have always felt it odd that Colonel Paul Tibbets named his plane after his mother. ... So now and forever more, Enola Gay will be remembered as a bringer of death and a shatterer of worlds. Thanks, Son." and "No-one remembers the name of the plane or the pilot that dropped the second bomb..."
Extraordinarily, Tibbets re-enacted the bombing, complete with a mushroom cloud, at an air show in Texas in 1976. What a *****.

Interesting analysis but I disagree. I do concur with SPK however that QOD has lost a little of its fizz recently. Prolonging the agony when its obvious no one knows seems a little unnecessary. Whereas, in knowing the answer to the current QOD but not answering, prolonging matters appeals to my sadistic nature

We do need to get back to QOD, QM should give the answer after 24 hours and set another question IMO

However knowing the answer a prolonging the agony is hardly in the spirit of QOD

Fair point and very true. Also a case of not having a decent Q to follow up with.
Still a little frazzled from hols and the one brain cell still functioning is currently having lunch.

Had this in a quiz some months ago. It is something like Boxcar I believe.
I accept no credit (if correct) as I did not know it then.
