Brain cancer apparently, same as fellow Canuck and fellow genius Gord Downie of The Tragically Hip, underrated band if ever there was one.....

Had to go get caught up watching some YouTube videos of rush when I saw the news, possibly the most talented 3 piece band ever.

RIP

Very Sad and another pointer that we're also getting old with so many icons from our youth gone.
Let's keep enjoying life to the full whilst we can.

Sad. A very influential drummer. My first concert was Rush 2112 tour at the Glasgow Apollo.

I can remember hearing Closer To The Heart on a pub jukebox in 1977 , still got the 12" single I bought the next day
When I hear it played I'm transported back to that moment, music triggers long forgotten memories.

A mate of my brother in law is the biggest Rush fan ever , we went to see them at the NEC about 15 years ago , it was standing and within 10 minutes of it starting he'd pushed his way to the front.

A few months later they released a DVD , I was at my brother in laws when he came round with it , excitedly played it, there's a 15 second segment of just him rocking out totally oblivious to anything else going on.
The cameraman must've thought , he's enjoying it we'll have him on the DVD

To say he was overwhelmed would be an understatement , Rush know who I am.

RIP Neil , you made some great memories for a lot of people.

Great drummer and let's not forget the band's lyricist, he was brilliant at that too apart from the Ayn Rand stuff.....

I have never felt this level of sadness for the passing of any other musician.
A band I have listened to since the late 70's.
The band whose music has featured on my stereo systems more than any other band and the only band which I have bought every one of their albums.
Neil has pretty much written the soundtrack of my life. Sadly they never came to Australia.....

Same for me. His passing has affected me over the weekend more than I would have imagined. Found myself watching some of the rare interviews he did. Such a gifted, intelligent but down to earth guy. And so resilient in the way he bounced back after the loss of his daughter and first wife. You’d have thought life had dealt him enough jokers without brain cancer to contend with in his final hand, having remarried and with a young daughter.

But so good to see how well liked he and Rush were as people in an industry so full of egos and sycophants. The reception they received when they were inducted into the RocknRoll Hall of Fame and their respective acceptance speeches were both heart warming and hilarious - worth a watch if you haven’t see them.

Anyway, I shall be continuing my nostalgic trip through the Rush back catalogue over the coming days and my thoughts will remain with his band members and family at this very sad time.

really, that does surprise me , almost 50 years of Rush and they never set foot in Australia,I wonder why

I have only ever met a handful of people that have even heard of them in Aus.
Can’t ever remember hearing them on mainstream radio here either.

I'm surprised how much it has affected me , on Radio 2 This morning Ken Bruce played Spirit of Radio as a tribute and I started welling up as the drums started, almost 45 years as a fan, Rush dominated my 1980s & 90s listening

When I was at Manchester University in 1980, I used to live next door to a Rush fanatic who used to play their records so loud I could hear their music walking down Oxford Road. That was my first exposure to Rush and what a fantastic band they were. Happy times!!....
