Route 66

Thinking of a driving holiday with Migliore man cub (19 yo), is Route 66 too cliche or recommended?

Europe? London to Rome?

I always promised myself I`d go treking to Nepal with him, but the knees have caught up with me, and he`s probably grateful for that!

Just fishing for ideas, thanks

It's something I have always planned to do so I say just do it.

I do know stretches of the road are abandoned but you can still drive the majority of it.

One day for me, one day.

Hi we was looking at doing route 66 this year but have decided to try and do it next year. some good quotes for 2 adults and 2 kids for about 15 days all around the 10k one with a Harley and a Mustang seem to be able to get soft top from Vegas only. Virgin, Bon Voyage and Complete North America pretty good places to start. good luck and enjoy.

There are companies who rent out classic cars in Italy for a tour of their country.......travel from Milan via Turin, down via Bologna, Modena to Rome, then further down to Amalfi coast to toe of Italy...........epic

Why not buy a classic....for much the same money being quoted for renting one for a fortnight..........take out insurance/breakdown cover.....and if it survives the 2 weeks run.....;).....agree a buy back price with original owner....insane....but think of the excitement!!!!!!!!

Lovin that Famma Frank, tell me, that has to be the underpinnings of a Bi Turbo Maser under there somewhere yes?

The proportions look bang on.

I have driven part of Route 66 about 12 years ago I flew into St. Louis. Missouri and drove south. I have to say for all the hype in songs the city is just an administrative one with little more than an airport and a mini White House....

Our cousins over the pond have no sense of history or nostalgia so to speak; when the road turns to freeway it will bypass all habitation and so that withers and is forgotten, becoming a ghost town in no time.

Thanks for those ideas. Buying instead of hiring is a good option for Australians visiting Europe on long service leave, I`ll check out the short term options. I wonder what Richard Grace would make of it?
Italy all looks so good compared to the potential to be disappointed by Route 66. It`s probably my bias though and why I`m driving a Maserati rather than a Mustang.

I did Route 66 back to front (LA to Chicago) in 2004.
And I did it in an all American Pontiac Sunfire.

Never heard of a Sunfire? Neither had I. Here it is:

Not exactly the American dream is it. But it was fairly cheap (compared to the Merc 500 CLK convertible I had in LA for a week) no problem with a one way rental and it was fairly frugal.

The trip itself alright. I did it on my own with no real planning. The highlight for me was meeting a girl in Albuquerque that i ended up staying with for 10 days. She was more fun than the Pontiac.

A couple of Aussies have asked in the past and I'm sure we could sort something out.

The USA has 1/2 famous routes.....but nearly every road in Italy leads you to somewheres fabulous.........let us know how the research goes
