Run Flat Tyres

Hi all

I need a pair of new tyres (rear) for my QP and since we don't have a spare I am thinking of getting a Run Flat Tyre. Pirelli do make them and they are not any more expensive than the normal ones. I understand the drive will be a bit harder but beside that will there be any other problem? Has anyone ever used them? Any advise/info will be appreciated.

Thanks . . . .

Rasoul, glad that must mean you've decided to keep the car. Regards the runflats, I've no experience of them I'm afraid, sure someone will be along soon who has.

Hi Richard

I hope you had a good holiday, I love to and want to keep it but whether I could its another story. In the mean time I need to put new tyres on it as it is on the border of becoming illegal.

I know nothing about run-flats on a QP. Hopefully someone who knows will answer your question.

Have you got a link to the ones you've found?

Rasoul, had a great time thanks, although hard at work while I was away too. If I were doing it, I'd put standard tyres on it anyway.

does it have a warning inside the car if you get a flat tyre? if not you would need to get one fitted before using them.

and the ride is slightly harder but nothing major.

I have run flats on the daily drive (BMW) and they are suited only to cars that left the factory that way. They have much stiffer side walls and have suspension suited to them.

If you were to fit them you would regret it very quickly, I would very much advise against it. Get a spare instead.

you must also remember a run flat tyre can only have the puncture repaired if its not driven on, so in my eyes it makes them pretty useless, unless of course you dont mind just putting new tyres on...

The point of run flat tyres is to get you to the nearest garage for repair, something you cannot do with a non run flat.

i know that, my point is im sure most would agree that a swapping over to a spare and having the tyre repaired for £10 or so is better than having to buy a new run flat tyre

So the consensus is: it is a bad idea.

I guess, as Beau says, unless you have Tyre Pressure Monitoring System installed and working it is also a dangerous idea as you wouldn't know when you have a puncture.

My car doesn't have a Tyre Pressure Monitoring System and being a Maserati it will probably be over £1000 to install it! It would be cheaper to get a spare instead, thanks for the advise . . .

Thank you all for your advise and info. As Michael said the consensus is that, its a bad idea. Even though on page 9 of QP's Owner's Manual it says that run flat tyres can be fitted to this car! I am going to stick to normal tyres for the mean time.
Thanks again
