Drew: Don't be so cynical: Let me rephrase the stats in light of your reply:
1: Comparing all European airlines, RA have the most modern fleet because they have invested heavily in that process, whereas the rest have not been as aggressive.
2. Punctuality is in the control/domain of ALL airlines - RA happen to be better at it than ALL the others.
There....pick the bones out of that one - and try to appreciate that they are giving it a go, unlike some airlines out there.
There's more to being a decent airline than having an incredibly aggressive (but I'll admit very effective) business model. They have squeezed every ounce of revenue out of the passengers, with the resulting hideous flight experience. They squeeze every ounce out of their staff, which isn't good for many reasons, but I'll just highlight safety as once particularly good one.
Investment in new aircraft was very good, and far-sighted by their CEO, no question.
They pad the timetables and fly to remote airports, which have little traffic and consequently lower risk of delayed arrivals. Trouble is, many of those airports are MILES from the cities they supposedly serve, so it's meaningless to talk about arriving on time, when there's a 1 hour bus journey to get to where the town really is. It's not just in the domain of a particular airline to ensure on-time arrival stats.
I very much appreciate it's an awesome business; it's just a crappy airline. I know several pilots and ex-pilots from RA, and none of them have a good word to say. I'm certain Benny can add to that too.
