screeching noise when i pull off

I've got a 03 plate 4200. i've noticed when cold that as i pull off there is a slight screeching noise. It appears to come from the engine bay (front left side) but it coincides with the clutch not fully engaging when i attempt to pull off slowly when the car is cold. Seems to dissappear once the car has warmed up.

Like i said - it seems like its some sort of belt slipping (im not sure if there are any on the 4200) or the clutch slipping a bit from pull off. but then the clutch is about 62% worn.

Anyone had something similar on their 4200?

Cheers in advance

The classic screach noise is the spigot bearing.

Usually it's when you pull away very hard in first.

The good news is that it's a warranty replacement. Not sure if it would extend to a ten year old car, but worth a go.

If the belts were screeching, it would do it in neutral too, so give that a whirl first. Also you could spray a little water on the belts (not too much) and see if that stops it.

Lozcb is the best person to talk to about the bearing.

If it is the spigot and Maserati agree to replace it, you can supply a new clutch and get them to fit it for free.

I'm leaning towards clutch. By 62%, the reading can only be used as a general guide, so it may be on its last legs. Does the car live outside? There's a small inspection hole beneath the clutch where moisture can get in, which would explain why it's apparent when cold. Have you noticed it dropping gears? This is accompanied by a flashing gear indicator in the dash. Have you had the PIS set to its minimum? If not this may give you a few more miles. Hope you get it sorted with minimum expense Maserati300.

Safrane - i think you've hit the nail on the head with the description of the sound!!! it's like an owl hoot!!! i was driving last night but it wasn't too cold so she hardly made a sound when pulling off in first gear.

Emtee - PIS, forgive me but what's that? the fact im even asking the question says i haven't had that set to minimum. Does not drop gears, however sometimes when changing down in to first just before im stopping it does THUD in to place.

Conaero - My initial thoughts was spigot bearing. when i looked through previous inovice for a service the spigot bearing appears to have been changed with the clutch. service was done by Giallo few years back (from reading the forum it seems ex ADG cars serviced by Giallo have had issues or at least non satisfied customer) so not sure how this would affect things if i tried to get it replaced via Maserati dealership?

The car is due a service so i think i'll take it to Autofficina - customer service seems ok with these guys. Although everytime i read Dem's posts on that company it does make me slightly concerned!!!

are there some idies that are better than others when it comes to clutch fitting and set-up?

Thanks for the pointers chaps

Well it would appear your spigot bearing never got changed, or somehow the superceeded part got fitted.

Autoficina will look after you

If the clutch still has plenty of life left I would leave it as it is.

I had this for 10k miles and the clutch was still OK once warmed up...I was also told that the clutch can become 'Glazed' if its been used in Auto a lot. To cure this a few swift starts in 2nd to remove the glaze.

Embrace your pet owl, mine is a familiar feature now, I can wait till I need a new clutch as there are no other issues.

The clutch in mine was replaced under warranty at 16k when the previous owner had it but at 51k it is going strong!
