I agree, it's horses for courses. In my experience, a decent garage whether it be am indie or a MD, will tell you where their strengths are and which models they have more experience on. My local MD won't work on a 3200 for example and are happy to tell you that in advance and at the same time, I understand that McGraths specialist area is more with the classic end of Maserati.
It pays to get to know the people who run and work at these garages and then make your mind up what's best for your car

There are definitely some great indies for specialist cars like Maserati and Porsche. I have more experience with Porsche and have experience excellent service from both Indies and MDs but also very poor service from one MDs. I think in summary you get to know good garages and bad ones regardless of if they are part of the MD network. The best example of how this works is there is a Porsche service centre in Byfleet that was previously an inde that has now converted to an official service centre. The same guys have been there for 20+ years and know some of the older cars just as well as the new ones for which they have the latest training and diagnostic equipment. They are a great bunch from my experience and you get a very personal service. Equally there is an indie in Crawley that is just as good and I have now found a Porsche specialist 5 mins from my new house that I will be trying out soon who also seem like a great bunch and will probably stop my 911 from ever returning to a MD for any work.

Being a MD does not guarantee great or cr4p service either way. Just find a good garage if you can and stick with it.

On the sales side they couldn't have been more helpful.

Not used for servicing but interested to know how you get on if you do use them.

(I get the impression they'll be sticklers for doing the factory "2yr by age items". And these seem to add a lot to the cost of a service - carbon can and lambda sensors. I think jointly they add about 1k to the cost).

They will be if a car is still under (extended) warranty but not otherwise.
