I know Maserati state 12k miles or 2 years for petrol quattroportes but is that what everyone on here does? Would have thought at least an oil change every 12 months would be in order?

Well, this is one I have thought about.

4200/GS/Spyder - annual
QP/GranTurismo - 2 yearly

Now they both use the same oil and are the same engine bar the wet vs dry sump thing so where is the logic?

Its all marketing I feel. Maserati with its newer models had to be seen to be up with its competitors so they just doubled the service time.

personally, I change my oil every 10k miles regardless. Seeing as I don't drive more than 3k miles a year, I am happy with the biannual on the Strad and would also be on the 4200/GS too...considering their age now.

Personally I am not a fan of these long intervals. In my company car I wouldn’t care if the oil turned into washing up liquid but on a highly strung price of exotica I would go annual on the oil. After all it’s £100. Does the rest of a service need to be done every year on a car that does 1500 miles a year? Not especially, you pay your money and take your choice.

I do 12 months oil and filter, then just oil in the middle 6 months.

Scour eBay et al and you can get Shell Helix or whatever fully-synth for £35-40 for 10ltr if you keep looking...

I bought my QP 2nd hand with 54K miles; the previous owner had it 5 years and did about 2.5K miles per year in it, and changed the oil with Shell Ultra Helix 5w-40 and factory filter every 12months.

I drive the car more frequently, and I run all my cars on a full ester synthetic; at the moment Millers NT+ for most cars and Motul 300v for my murcielago. I would change annually or 5K miles (3K in my track day car).

Theres no way I'd let used oil sit in a sump for 2 years.... the TBN (total Base number) declines with use, and it will just be more acidic over time... more frequent oil changes are better, even if using a relatively cheap oil, over a more expensive oil less often; to be fair the official oil is a very cheap oil- if you want to stick to it, change every 6 months or 3-5K miles...

In the USA, and Australia (I've lived in the USA, and grew up in Australia) they both pay far more attention to oil changes in general than UK car owners. The extended drain intervals are obviously to do with selling cars on PCP/lease and for fleet managers so that an either no, or 1 oil change would be required during the first 3 years of use, after which the car is sold, and its engine life is not their problem....

OK I admit I hang out on oil forums too....

That's interesting what you say about oil degrading. I understood that it stops offering the same level of protection after c.2 years, irrespective of mileage, but was told by someone on here that's not the case. I've always avoided buying a used car that's gone more than 2 years between oil changes as to me it's a sign the owner has skimped on maintenance.

Re service intervals, are there any preventative maintenance checks performed annually on the 4200/GS/Spyder that the later cars don't need?

Do a service as close to every year on the GS...even if miles are in the 100s pa.

What you save in service costs you loose far more in a lower resale price.

As cars (well any machine to be fair) age, the mean time between failure reduces. The only way to prevent unplanned failure is to increase preventative maintenance or carry out wear analysis (things like oil spectrochemical testing).

There is absolutely no doubt that the more often you change things like oil, the less benefit you will see from that change. But does it help me sleep at night? Absolutely :)

Yea - I am now doing this - oil change, MoT and thoroughly good inspection in the non service years...

How much do people pay for an oil change on a QPV ? I live in London and getting a range of £250 - £350 which seems a little crazy??

Unless there is a mystical way of doing things, surely all you need is the oil, an oil filter and a sump nut and some height, and disposal condiments for used oil.

8 litre of expensive oil, wages, rent, rates etc etc. Many garages will disappear as new cars are offered with subsidised service packs, cars are designed to die earlier and emissions controls and the continuation of £555 (and growing) car tax on older big engined cars is ensuring that they are scrapped well ahead of the end of their useful lives.

Really if that bill is bothering you, I would sell the car before a bill ten times that size comes next year.

Thanks for this. Nope, not bothering me but just interested to know

I suppose I don't see it as a lot for the size of engine, type of car and geographic location. Would be cheaper on a Tesla...;)
