Six years with Granturismo versus six years with a 4200

Having just clocked up six years with my Granturismo I glanced through my records to see how reliability compared with my previous 4200 also owned for six years.

Both cars owned from two years old and 10k miles.

On balance (surprisingly) the 4200 was the better built, more reliable car. Apart from rust……

4200:
Faults/failures in 6 years:
Airflow meter.
Front drop links.
Rear suspension bushes.
Rust! Everywhere despite being garaged and never used in rain. Bottom of doors, boot lid, under ns light cluster, wheel arches.

Granturismo:
Faults/failures in 6 years
Engine mounts failed. £1k
Power steering radiator leaked- replaced £1k+
Front spring broke, leading to front suspension bushes seized,V. expensive. £3k
Bits of interior and exterior trim coming away (poor glue in factory)
No signs of ANY rust anywhere so something has improved.
Having said all that both cars have proved pretty bullet proof- people are amazed in the pub when I tell them nothing (hardly) ever goes wrong with a Maserati!

Interesting the parts that failed aren't exotic pieces are they? Bushes, springs, mounts, glue - all well understood by the motoring industry for many years.

Odd the rust, having had 3 4200's I have only ever seen one bit and that was under one taillight on the current GS that has now been done.

Picking my 42 back up today from having a leaky power steering pump fixed and also there appears to be a fault with new reversing light micro-switches as I have had 2 new ones from Euro Spares and both were faulty!!.............Here's hoping 3rd time lucky!!

But I agree, pretty reliable!..........More so than my brothers car!

Indeed, no rust on mine other than a suspected area under the paint on the bonnet shut panel by the adjusters but in the time I had it it never changed so it may have been a build up of something on the metal pre-paint.

5 years in my GranTurismo and warranty just expired. Had 2 springs fail (4 replaced), a/c compressor and one valved back box. Rust on boot chrome trim screws and fuel cap screws. That's it and drive it in the winter. Done 35k miles.

Only thing inside being an e/w switch and seat frame parts oh and seat stripping a few wires early on leading to Christmas Tree dash and lorry.

OK with all that.
