My boat builder friend has come up trumps and designed and built me a bespoke hi-fi stand. Designed to fit the window seat, it’s three tiers of smoked acrylic, specifically for my equipment. Looks fab in real life. (Just a few wires left for me to tidy.)

But it's Ewan, those rules don't applyYou do know you're suppose to listen *before* dropping 4 (5) figures?

What’s the theory behind not supporting the whole record?
You do know you're suppose to listen *before* dropping 4 (5) figures?
I listened to (well, read) the reviews. Does that count?
One that’s flawed! What’s the theory behind not supporting the whole record?
Hear, hearI’m perfectly willing to admit that this set up was chosen for a variety of reasons beyond just the sound, with nostalgia, styling and brand being high up the list. But it’s all well respected kit, made by some of the UK’s best known designers/manufacturers, having won countless plaudits.
It sounds fine to me. But my cauliflowered rugby ears are probably not the best!
For the same money it may well be possible to buy something new that sounds better. But in the same way that a £200k MC20 is a “better” car than a £200k mk1 Ghibli, I know which I’d rather have and which would give me more pleasure across a range of emotions. On the Transcriptor, even just using the knurled cylinder that lifts the tone arm is a tactile joy, so the pleasure starts way before the music even begins. And to me, that matters.
The coolest, for sureOne that’s flawed!
The original transcriptor turntable had those supports the other way up, so the record was only supported on a few small dots. John Michell had the idea that inverting them gave the record more support, so would be better (which is the turntable you see here). But of course, the logical step on is to have a complete platter, to support the whole record.
So, I don’t think anyone thinks it’s the best way to support a record, but we can agree it’s the most cool.

Reminds me of those big ghetto blasters you use to see people carrying through town on a weekend
