All depends. I'm no mechanic, but both my 4200, and GT do that if I reverse the car out of the garage, (to get something out of the loft for example) and then put it straight back in.

The next time I start her up I get a load of blue smoke. I can only assume the car is complaining at not being taken out for a good thrashing.

The car is fine after that.

Had you been driving it enthusiastically and then stopped for a while before restarting? If yes, then mine has done this twice ( in 8 years) - both times after some spirited (track) driving. I was told it's something to do with the oil scavenging system for the dry sump. That's probably ********, but certainly my engine is in very good health.

Thnx guys...!
I am somewhat reassured to learn of your experiences....!
Yes, I thrashed her bit yesterday. Otherwise have had to move her couple times.. so no time to get oil pumped through it running for less than a minute...It hasn’t done it again thus far ! Something I wonder about- turning the key, I tend not to touch throttles these days on any bikes/vans/ cars. But the ECU does seem to insist on a flurry of revs, more than I’d feel okay doing given oil is likely drained down....
I assume this is normal. The car has a nasty rattle the first time if it is cold. This is relatively quickly gone. I’d guess oil pressure related but what do I know....?
Following this smoke event, the ECU hasn’t insisted on the high revs at start up...Why would it alter the start protocol?

No hum....no point worrying. It’ll likely be valve stem seals or guides if it does prove to have gone bad...?
Suck it & see...:p:cool:

Don't touch the throttle. The ECU will determine what is required, your input will only confuse things. And worrying about it will be equally pointless as we can't reverse engineer the software :D

Top end rattle when cold is pretty normal AFAIK on these. As long as it goes in a couple of seconds. I think there's a non-return valve that can be replaced / fitted to improve things but....

I get a rattle on my 4.2 QP when either cold or left standing for a while, goes after 2 secs and disappears on next starts when engine is warm...

Make sure oil level is not too high.

Remember to check when engine running and hot

I checked this out with Emblem in Poole some years ago when mine did it for the first time.

Myles said nothing to worry about as it is a quirk of the engine...as long as it is just no, and then.

I have had three coupes now and each one has blown a little smoke every few months and it has been after various types of driving and positions of parking.

Mine did it the other day after pulling it out of garage to do some bits, wash and then back in..

Thnx 4 the feedback....!
Just been serviced at McGrath’s, so going to assume oil level is correct !

Whatever the cause Tim, It's excess oil that's not supposed to be in the combustion chambers!
I'd say worn valve guides / oil seals

Take no notice of the doom merchant. Speak to Myles at Emblem Sports Cars and I am sure he will give the same advice as he did me almost a decade ago.

No, but a 4200 as per the original question is.

Thanks for a reminder why I don’t bother post on here much any more

Why's that then? Because people can't tell who you're responding to unless you quote the message? Just curious, like

Or just take no notice Tim, as many of the non technical minded people on here do anyway!

There are one or two oil additive's available that do soften old nitrile based engine oil seals, you might want to give it a go, you just chuck it in and drive a hundred miles are so

It might well get you out of trouble for a couple of years

Is the 4.2 QP dry sump, then?

Yes and no!

All 4.2 QP5s with the F1 gearbox are dry sump. They have red cam covers.

All ZF automatic 4.2 QP5s are wet sump, with blue cam covers.

All 4.7 QP5s have the ZF automatic, are wet sump and have red cam covers.

Simple :)

Some time ago when doing a bit of research I seem to remember there was a post on the Maserati Life site where someone had smoke coming out the exhaust on start up on an odd occassion and the replies back seemed to be that everyone else had had a similar experience.
I can't remember the colour of the smoke they were referring to.
