Really? I've just had a look at the layout, lots of straights, fast bends and a few slower corners...but am I right in thinking that you would need to dial out the under-steer for those fast right-handers at woodcote, madgewick and the one after fordwater...? They look like they would eat front tyres.

My second track day was Goodwood and it was very suited to the 4200 far better than Llandow as it has a decent straight ir two...and as for facilities...hard to beat.

Re front tyres...my were shot after my first Llandow. ..lots of tread left but you could not tell the brand as the sholder on the NSF was bald...it was the chicanes that took their toll. Llandow is a great budget track day but to short for a big GT in my humble opinion.

the first Maser track day we did was at Goodwood a few years ago, the only time I took my old 3200 on a track. It was very well suited to the circuit - long straights and long, fast corners. I had virtually no tyre wear, but remember the brakes smoking a bit after a long succession of laps. The instructors were also excellent. One drove my car first to show me the circuit and lines to take. It was great to sit in the passenger seat and see a 'real' driver take control and show me that the ca was way more capable than my driving skills! I'd definitely do it again.

Your experience seems quite common, Peter. I've not done Llandow as I not think it would suit my car (or pocket by the sounds of things!!)

If I didnt have to pay for repairs I'd love it :) It's the lack of run off that puts me off taking the maser; there are some barriers far too close to the track for comfort on some of the bends.

Chris, understeer isnt the problem. Getting the back end out to kill it dead is the problem; one mistake and your in the barrier in some spots. Perhaps I'm just chicken :)

Lack of pressure causes that. Exactly the same with me last time there. Set the tyres at a pressure that gave even temp across the tread and it killed the sidewalls. This time I ignored the temps and took it up to 40psi. Hardly any wear on the sidewall this time out. I blame this fad for ultra low profiles, if I were getting a set of wheels and tyres for track use I'd go down an inch or two on the wheel size.

Silverstone would be more fun, but potentially much more expensive if you get it wrong!

I didnt like the look of llandow when I first saw it. However these "huge GT cars" can hold their own round there. It's only the bus stop where the car feels a little lairy; so you go in a little slower and more controlled on a better racing line and all of a sudden you're going through there fast enough to keep a lotus honest! By the time you're on the start of the back straight you've caught him again. The nice thing about small circuits is you get to practice each corner much more than large circuits without using stupid amounts of fuel.

I measured my tyre depths before and after - think I lost about a mm on the rear and just under that on the front.

I think you're too brave if anything!
Nah, these are easy cars to catch compared to a mid engined car. The problem I have with goodwood is that in getting up to speed sometimes I get it wrong. On most circuits getting the back end out too far is fine (ask Andy, with him in the pax seat I buggered up the one corner at Llandow and ended up looking at the circuit though the side window but plenty of time and space to recover it). At goodwood I always feel that if I did that there'd be no second chance!

In the end I had a really good exit from the bus-stop on that line we talked about, accelerating through the final two corners, but was messing up the devils elbow by not moving over to the left before turning in to it so I couldn't go through carrying the speed. Got it right right at the end, but then Doris gave up on me so I couldn't practice. It is very satisfying when you get it right.

Next time I want to try your trick of adding a little oversteer to counteract the understeer, especially onto the back straight. Means I need to turn of the TC and be brave enough to play with it. At least I'm learning each time out, and for a newbie like me discussions like these are great.

Love Goodwood. Tool the M3 CSL there back in 2009 with the Maserati Forum lot....Very fast track and suited the Maseratis as well but as you say run off in some places a bit scary.

If a list for the next one is starting, count me in - no 4.

Maybe by the 3rd visit I'll learn better lines.

Going in too hot (not slowing enough at end of main straight) certainly knackered up my lines through the set of bends at the control tower.

I remember your CSL there, Andy. The intake sound as you were giving it some welly was glorious.
