Tax on new cars

Just had a splendid meal out in Aarhus with some Danish chaps, during which we got to talking about buying cars.

Seems they have a slight problem with the cost of new cars in Denmark, which left me speechless. They get to see the 'base' cost of the car in the showroom, which is typically less than we would pay in the UK, but then the fun starts. I'm told there is a tax of 180% levied on each new car, then VAT is applied to the new price, at a whopping 25%. Importing a used car is a lottery, as the true value of the car is decided by some bureaucrat, without regard to any claimed purchase price, and the taxes applied to suit. Haven't seen any Maseratis here....

I spent quite a bit of time over there a couple of years back setting up our Danish office.
They have a slight problem with the cost of everything over there! All cars attract the Danish luxury tax, regardless of make and model. The new Danish MD I appointed there told me very proudly about his brand new car which had cost him a small fortune that I remember thinking must have bought something very fancy. He picked me up from the airport as he was so pleased with it - a BMW 316i touring!!! Chocolate also gets hit with the luxury tax, work that one out. Oh, and they also have a tough start before paying for anything - income tax is around 70%. The Danish office is heavily staffed by Swedes who drive over the bridge from Malmo to Copenhagen. Houses are cheaper and they earn about 25% more working in Denmark. They come to London and buy clothes in Bond Street because "it's so cheap"!!

I thought Denland was in the EU...sounds like they have more problems collecting tax than in France!

The population is just 5m. I guess that for a seemingly well-run, clean, friendly country they need those citizens to cough up a significant tax on everything. Stunning place, very clean and the women are generally unbelievably attractive, but I couldn't live there.

Much the same in the RoI.....horrific rate of tax on new cars, quite a few countries have punitive taxes on "luxury" goods.............always unfair IMHO....

Surely Frank you can just go and buy a expensive car from across the border and run it around on UK plates for 12 months like in the rest of the EU....

If you are emigrating to RoI, I believe you can take your car with you, but not allowed to sell it for 12 mths. If you live there and import a car, all duties must be paid toute suite

Not VRT.......they don't even list maserati....prepare to get shafted!

On the old RR I bought in October, they'd want 36% extra from me if I lived in RoI

P

As all cars are foreign in Ireland anyway, what car does the average person buy over there then, foreign!

Bet old Deloreans are worth a bomb over there or where the NI built?

Frank, can you give us any history on car production in ROI?
