Tesla Model S

I thought I'd share my very-nothing-like-a-maserati new car. I ordered the Model S back in November and picked it up about 10 days ago (just 3 weeks after they arrived in the country). For those that don't know this is a purely electric car - there's no engine or petrol tank anywhere to be found. It's a lovely car overall, about the size of an A8 or a 7 series BMW. So for me that's very big, and very wide! Inside it's huge, having no gearstick, no transmission tunnel, and of course no engine - it's got a reasonably large boot at the front to go with the enormous one at the back.

0-60 in 4.2 seconds according to Tesla, but in the US they've timed it at 3.9s. And that's on a front-wheel drive car! The acceleration is brutal - given there's no clutch to engage, or engine to spin up - it's immediate and constant. And did I mention brutal? So it's phenomenally fast, does 250 miles on a charge in reality (that about £4 in electricity) and costs me just £600 a year to insure.

Ok so it's also pretty expensive to buy (they range from £50k to £100k depending on spec - mine was about £85k which gives me the fastest model with all the essential options and a couple of nice to have ones) and the resale values are anybody's guess in three years time. However the benefit-in-kind tax as a company car is zero this year, so I'm buying it through my company and I reckon that saves me about 40% compared with what I'd have to earn, and then pay tax on, to be able to buy the same car (that also includes the fact that the company gets 20% corporation tax back on the purchase price). Then all the accessories are the same 40% off, plus we get the VAT back on them too so they're more like half price. And accessories includes insurance, servicing, tyres, and anything else you may want for it. So overall this is like me buying a £50k personally which feels more reasonable.

Below, hopefully, are some pictures.

Cheers,
Ben.

Quite a nice looking car, not sure about the interior styling but I'm sure it'd grow on me. Well done.

I am the reverse, I quite like the interior but the exterior is leaving me a little cold. I suppose its because we have seen the other sports car Tesla did, I assumed that would carry over in to the sedans. Dare I say it.....Jag XF????

Ben, does it have a mile-o-meter monitor like a normal car?

Ben, I saw one at the airport the other week and I'm afraid it just did nothing for me.......I thinks it's the grill.....But hey we are all different....

It looks terrific in red. I can walk around a Tesla and move in an instant from desire to ambivalent and back again. I'd love to have a go in one.

Not a bad looker Ben, as Matt says a bit XF'ish, performance sounds pretty interesting..!! How have you found the charging point availability, previous reports say these are few and far between..??

That would be a tease on Italian night at Ace as the charge point is on the end of the building and they wouldn't let it into the carpark..... :(

I don't like the looks, particularly the front, but there is no knocking 3.9 seconds and £4's worth of 'fuel'.

Brave purchase, even with the tax breaks. I hope it works for you at resale time.

Is 3.9s for that car, or the sports car model..??

Ben, if the motor is between the rear wheels, how does it get to be a front wheel drive, is there a prop shaft then..??

Ooooh, I like the interior. I had seen pics of the interior in reviews online and in magazines, but I wasn't that taken by it. But it looks great in your pic. Really like the ali pedals. (Just wished BMW offered them in the i8 :( )
As for the exterior, I like the look of it from the side/rear... Yes it's a little XF'ish as Matt and Robert have said, but that's not a bad thing IMHO as I like the looks of the XF. However I'm with Andy and Michael regarding the front grille and bumper - I think it's the front end that puts a dampener on it for me.

Having said all that, overall, it looks like a nice, competent car, that looks smart, has enough torque from the electric motor for overtakes, and looks comfortable for long journeys... And with the tax benefits, it makes a good case for a company car.

Congrats on your new toy Ben. Hope you enjoy it. Would you be so kind as to provide us with updates on what it is like to live with/run e.g. 'real world' range, charging times, ability to charge (there are public charging points at a shopping centre not far from me, but all the spaces were taken up by traditional ICE cars , technical issues (if any), dealership after-sales experience (I thought they had to be ordered online due to lack of UK dealerships?!?),....

Cheers,
T

Matt - yes it has an odometer (is that what you meant?) so second hand versions will be priced somewhat on mileage I'm sure.

I too see the XF-ness on the outside, but that's not terrible in my view. It's a pretty enough car for a hulking great thing. Personally though I'm waiting for a smaller 3-series sized thing to come out - or even better how about an all-electic Alfieri? Or maybe not..! The previous Tesla (the Roadster) was a Lotus Elise of colorise, so this is the first 'ground-up' car Tesla have designed and made.

Charge points aren't a big deal for me - all my journeys are within range and I charge at home overnight. However there is quite good coverage at motorway service stations where you can charge at 50 miles of range an hour. And they're building the really fast chargers now - that's 80% charge in the 20 minutes it takes to get a sandwich and visit the facilities.

Robert - ignore my front wheel drive nonsense - it is RWD of course. The 3.9 is what I've read the car has been tested at (which is indeed also the quoted time for the old Roadster). Either way though hits darn quick!

Thanks for all the interest - I shall post updates as and when anything interesting comes up.

The worst thing is that now I'm really stuffed in terms of car buying - I have no more space on the drive, so the next one to replace would be the 4200 which I don't think will be happening for a while!

Cheers
Ben.

I was gobsmacked to see one at traffic lights in central Salisbury a couple of weeks ago. A nice looking machine I thought.

Thanks Tilum - it's that Model E which I'm looking forward to. Just hope it's not too cheap - it's got to be top quality as well as fast for me!

Drove one on Friday... Jesus! Stunned how much I loved it... Silence, instantaneous power, all that +400bhp AT ONCE! No lag or delay, awesome beast... Yes, beast, silence is really the only criticism, and they don't play a V8 noise though the stereo ;-(

I like them too and considered one but got a 3 year XJ instead. Love it to bits....fantastic car that does it all very well. The Tesla S price was just a bit north for me of what I could justify. Maybe a few more years of more sales and more adopters will start to ease prices .

I heard a battery replacement on an early Tesla Roadster was £10k which would hurt a bit!
