I have been watching granturismo prices for about 18 months now, just spotted the cheapest one I have ever seen! It's on auto trader for just under 24k. Ok it's a cat c but still much cheaper than anything I have ever seen.
I don't think they have bottomed out yet, I just can't make my mind up if should sell my 996c4s and get one now, or wait until the prices are more aligned in a year or 2......

i saw that, i dont think its worth that being a cat C

there has been others up for 25k hpi clear, so i think in reality that makes the cat c one worth no more than 20k imo

Its about 20% aint it....depends on the miles and condition between the cat c and the one you saw at 25k, if similar then yes its too much as it needs to be 20k or under.....

I was looking at a burgundy one 6 months ago, looked immaculate cat D for 26k but it had very low mileage , under 25k IIRC , given the drop in GT prices if this is similar mileage and immaculate I'd expect it to be in the 20-22k band by now

I think it will be a little longer yet before we see a normal non cat 4.2 GT at under 25k.

My dilemma is that my current car is going up in value just as quick as the granturismo is coming down.. At the moment I would have to put my car plus maybe 8k to get me In a nice Maserati, but in another 12 months the difference may only be 6k etc etc. Am I just being a tight git or being sensible!? Just my luck in 2 years the c4s will have gone up by 5k and be worth more than the maser!

I hear it every day regarding the property market
my answer is always the same....do what you need to do and want to do and dont wait on markets to improve.....no one can predict the future....

What if we have another recession? Yes the Maser will fall but so would the Porsche....drive one, decide if its for you and then go for it

I am not sure you are comparing apples with apples.

I think 996C4S will continue to rise in real terms but very slowly in the same way my 997GTS appears to be doing. That means the same car with say 3k more miles in 12 months time will be worth the same or slightly more than it is today. The question is whether the Granturismo is really falling in real terms? Yes they are getting cheaper as they get older and add miles, but as they are available at relatively high volumes, that is unlikely to stop for some time (with the exception of the Stradale due to limited supply).

That's fine if you are happy with an older car with more miles. The scenario that means it makes sense to wait is if you could buy a 2009 car with 30,000 this year for £40,000 and next year you could get a 2010 car with 30,000 for £35,000, that means you are really saving £5,000 by waiting. If you wait that same year and end up with the same 2009 car with 34,000 miles for £35,000 yes you have "saved" £5,000, but only by buying an older car with more miles on the clock. Make sense?

Yes, that makes sense, but there is another factor. My current car will be going up in value at the same time, closing the gap of how much extra I have to spend. If I wait 2 years I may not have to put any extra down.

I think I need to convince myself a bit more, I guess I need to drive one and see if it ticks all the boxes, maybe then I will think it's worth it

The more you wait the more you miss out on the whole ownership experience and surely that it part of it? I don't car if mine depreciates, it is a car they do that. I have other cars which are appreciating and they will offset it a bit but life is too short, buy the best car you can, don't worry about miles and enjoy it!

Yeah I initially wanted a GranSport when they were down around the 20k mark, they have increased nicely over the past 2 years!

I'd say keep the 996 as you seen more interested in a car's worth than whether it meets your current driving requirements. As others have said the GranTurismo is still too new to be increasing in value so if you are happy with the Porsche then stick with that for now.

PS That's if you believe in this whole 'cars going up in value thing'. It's a relatively new situation and is only due to people looking for places to put cash not an intrinsic desire for the underlying cars themselves for many purchasers.

It's still a risk buying a Gransport if you're worried about losing money because you could be at the top of the market, I've been reading on a few sites there's plenty of classic cars that have been for sale for months , all it takes is for the investors to get scared and start cutting the prices, enthusiasts don't care about the value because they love the car but those in it for the money do.

Classic cars have become one of the biggest money spinners for investors over the last few years because there's no CGT on cars

The 55 year old's have been boosting the market with their pension lump sums , the 30k Capri can't keep going up forever, there has to be a top somewhere or in 10 years Chris Evans will have a fleet of white Capri's and all the old ferrari's will belong to the russian billionaires

As others have said, buy it to enjoy.

For me buying for investment will remove all the enjoyment as you'll just worry about eroding the value by using it.

I thought about the 996 before buying my GS as both about the same price then, I chose the more reliable option!

Went from an 'appreciating' GS to a depreciating GT. Didn't give it a second thought.

Found the GT I liked in a very different colour combination and just wanted it. It will get used, scratched, stone chips, cost money, lose value.

I just think I am lucky. As a boy who's favourite Matchbox toy was a green Khamsin that I now look out of my kitchen window and there is a real Maserati on the drive.

I bought it to drive. The minute I look at it as an investment it will cease to ignite the smile of that little boy and his Matchbox car.
