Sell the 996 before the IMS/RMS problems see your engine go pop! Then, if possible early depreciation is an issue go for a Gransport. But if possible earlier depreciation is not an issue and you really want something heavier and slower, go for the Grantourismo.

As others have said, buy it to enjoy.

For me buying for investment will remove all the enjoyment as you'll just worry about eroding the value by using it.

This!

The problem with having a car that is appreciating (and if you are buying with that in mind) is that you will not want to put miles on the car. I have never been in a situation where I had to think twice about driving a my "fun" cars because of damaging the value. I generally try and use them at every opportunity, and would not like to feel restricted. I read in EVO a few months back a specialist reviewing values of Ferrari 360CS and he firmly stated that you should not buy one if you have any plans to actually drive it as they are just too valuable and mileage dependent, and therefore hugely expensive to run, completely unrelated to fuel, maintenance and repairs! That cannot be good.

If the car is right for you, and you can afford it, buy it and enjoy. If it happens to lose very little money or gain during that period, then treat that as a bonus. If affording it is related to increasing values, that is a very dangerous game as the wind can change and catch you out as others have said.

Yeah I initially wanted a GranSport when they were down around the 20k mark, they have increased nicely over the past 2 years!

To my knowledge only 3 GranSports have been for sale on the open market at £20k or less, the last one sold around a year ago. That would have been an unrealistic budget to have much to choose from.

Yeah I agree, don't get me wrong my car is no garage queen, I have done over 26k miles in my ownership! It's party due to the fact it's the first car i have ever owned that has lost no value in the 4 years I have owned it. It's a nice feeling!

All boxsters and 996/997 (pre dfi) can have rms weeps and ims issues, but generally if the ims hasn't gone by 60kmiles it's not going to. My well used example has 90k on the clock, I don't worry about that or even scored bores.

My 996 had engine failure which I knew about for years, cylinder 5 went and it cost 7.5k to rebuild... I sold her for 7k. (1998 first build) and bought the GTS 4.7 bad boy, MC Shift, x pipe crazyness and don't think about its value to much.. Im careful on the miles but its my only car and drive her all over, it makes me smile every time I drive her and the cackles start ... a different experience from the Porsche.

Either buy to love and drive, or buy as investment hard to balance the both.

Im looking at putting money into cars at present as no CGT as long as not going crazy, so if anyone knows of some nice models at a good price let me know :)

Because that difference is useable on British roads

The GT and GS are both nice cars but the 4200/GS only gets noticed by the General public if it has a loud exhaust, everybody notices the GT because of its looks

At oulton park on Monday the Maserati line was mostly 4200s and Gransports , it might as well have been the start of the car park for all the attention we got from the public, had it been a line of GTs I'm sure there would have been more interest

I looked at this one to, the Cat C put me off. However if it was nearer then I'd still have a look at it. It does seem very cheap, but for a bit more there are other options out there.

If a car has been repaired properly I don't have a problem buying it if the price is right but it has to be a keeper as maseratis are hard enough to find a buyer if they're straight, if you're keeping it then it could be a good buy

It was probably taken off, stuck on the wrap then not replaced when the wrap was removed

I was looking at that GT last night. Like a few others have said, Masers can be difficult to sell so if you buy that particular model it is keeper. Buying these cars is an emotional decision rather than a rational one so go out and drive one; If you are not swept away by the drama and passion then maybe keep your Porsche a bit longer.

I have been thinking of getting one of these in a few years once they depreciate under £20K but the thought of selling my Manual 4200GT in favour of a paddle shift makes me wince. Only one thing for it, buy both! My excuse will be that the other Maserati is for the Mrs even though I'm tempted by a GranCabrio and she hates convertibles lmao. To be honest I'm not fan of convertibles either but the GranCabrio is just... naughty! She will want the 4.7 GTS no doubt.

one on autotrader now £22,000 Cat D

i would be going to have a look, but the matt black paint ruins the car (not a wrap - i phoned and asked, so not really interested, said he would take £21500)
