The end of petrol and diesel.

I see the main headlines today are of the ban on new sales of petrol and diesel engined vehicles.

So get saving for that last Maserati V8!

I'm not going to worry about it, I doubt it'll happen in my lifetime , imagine the chaos at the motorway services trying to find a charge point

Looks like they are copying the French and going for a 2040 timeline. The chances are that the majority will be electric by then anyway so its going to make little difference. I'll be in my 70s so buying a new petrol car probably won't be something I'd be looking at anyway so its not really going to impact me. As long as I can stockpile a little fuel to keep me going for a few years I'll be fine.

I think it will happen naturally before the date. Once they sort out availability (particularly in rural areas) of charging options and range of batteries to closer match a tank of the good stuff and get the purchase price down. Watch out for a gradual increase in using combustion engines taxes though to "encourage" a move over. Sounds stupid, but I would predict if they start supplemental taxation of "newer" petrol engines that by 2040 most of the petrol cars on the road will be classics run by enthusiasts. If a V8 with a larini sounds loud now, how loud will it be next to hundreds of silent electric boxes! ;)

I'm looking forward to the plans for all the new power stations required for this switch. Solar panels on houses wont be enough...

Until they can invent a battery that'll pull a 40tn lorry for 8 hours non stop or power a 50k tonne container / oil ship then it ain't going anywhere for good.

They'll just impose more **** on cars but even then a quick switch to electric will compromose the national grid, new stations needed and I wonder where all those power stations will get their nice clean gas from, that's right the same holes in the ground the black stuff comes from.

It is coming mind through government regulation only, they just don't have all the answers yet.

I don't be think utilities will be able to upgrade the electric grid and have enough electricity generation capability to support the majority of cars on the road being electric.

Not on a 20 year timeframe anyway.

This will be one of those ever moving target dates

And they are not banning hybrids. I don't think we'll be out of fuel before we stop driving.

C

I misread the report I saw then. I thought that hybrids were included. That makes this completely and utterly useless, unless you are after good publicity. The chances are that by 2040 there won't be many petrol only cars on the road anyway. The existing hybrid fudge can then be used to allow more and more powerful sports cars.

The irony here is that having said that "Brexit is Brexit" and wanting to set our own agenda this is a blatant copy of the French policy announced a few weeks ago. They could have at least brought it forward 5 years, when it would equally be a pointless statement, and claim to be leading the world.

What I read said it INCLUDED hybrids. Mind the media and science fact in all this seem to be miles apart anyway.. so who knows!

Ah I see you have the Italian flag now too. Looks like you have coloured the whole of the fins and not just the leading edge, interesting.

They are clip-on plastic moulded to cover the entire fin. It should be possible to remove them if necessary. Saved me having to have a steady hand.

I had a meeting with JLR a few weeks ago and they were saying that they expect to be only selling diesel by 2040 so I guess this 'ban' is consistent with what the auto manufacturers are telling respective governments (France, UK)

In the news this morning they were talking about a scrapage scheme so more waste but at least scrap metal will get cheaper.

In the Queens speach she talked of electric charge points at every petrol station by year 20XX. Still not enough chap at JLR was saying that the cars will need a level of automation so when you are not using them for example at night the car will go find a charge station by itself and wait in a queue of other automated vehicles. When you step out of your house next morning the car will be on the drive with a full charge.

They have also figured out wireless charging let's say on your drive. Only problem they forsee is that the charger will naturally get hot and they think small animals such as cats will sleep under between the car and wireless charger so they will more than likely get cancer from it... interesting times ahead maybe the mutant cancer cats and automated AI vehicles will fight for supremacy over Earth

Most usage will be able to be handled by charging at, or near, home. The only issue then will be people going on long trips and the fight for charging points at service stations. I'm not sure that, even with charging points in every space, that a motorway services would be able to fuel as many electric vehicles as they currently do fossil fuel ones at peak times. There's then the massive overhaul of the electrical supply to these places. It gets more complex the more you think about it.

Perhaps electrical supply technology is the thing to invest in.
