The excitement and passion is gone

I took my son in law to pick up his new Tesla model Y yesterday and what a depressing experience it was, the pick up was from the Tesla self service point located on the ground floor of a dark, grey, concrete carpark at the **** end of the Bluewater shopping center. There was one guy there who did not even have a cabin to sit in and was freezing, his job was to hand over the key and show people how to access the "Tesla tutorials" on the screen, that's it, there was no handover as such and the guy said that no PDI had been done, any faults need to be raised on line and a tech will visit, it was, as I say, pretty depressing and a stark contrast to when I picked up my Ala 156 GTA a few years back which was roped off in the center of the showroom under a red dustsheet with an Alfa logo on it and a bouquet of flowers on the passenger seat for my wife.

When I picked him up to take him to the pickup point I used my 3200 and said to him in jest "I'm using it just to remind you what a real car is like to drive". I have since been in the Tesla and whilst the tech is amazing I just cant get enthusiastic about sitting in faux leather seats looking out over plastic and fake wood with nothing in front of me. Don't get me wrong it's a fantastic achievement in terms of tech and if you want a relaxing drive with no drama then I'm sure its one of the best although I am sure there are better. On a more positive note I have just been out for an early drive in my 3200 this morning just to remind myself why I still keep it; with the Tesla I could have pre heated the cabin, pre heated the battery for higher cold start performance and checked the car over from the comfort of my armchair all via wireless data (and paid half as much for the fuel) but there would be no noise, no fumes, no instrument binnacle and most importantly no FUN.

Cant agree more, bought my wife a little Suzuki Vitara, showroom handover, car cover, flowers….

My friend has a Tesla with ludicrous mode (Model S?) it’s super fast, but soulless…… horrible thing, but zero benefit in kind so he saves a fortune against having a proper car.

I am lovin the fact that EV’s will start paying car tax and expect the benefit in kind to be taxed in the future as well.

And hearing that the Swiss may ban their non essential use during peak energy times this winter made my day.

You have inspired me to take the Strad for a run today, and I may even dig the Sunbeam Tiger out of the garage as well.

Having heard the stories about the shocking build quality of Teslas it comes as no surprise to hear there are no PDIs - push the problem onto the customer once they have paid in full collected the car.

A good summary...the Tesla’s are so dull looking too. I will hang on to my Coupe GT for as long as I can. Every outing is special.

Well said; I’m sure they’ve relieved him of >£50k in the process too. They’re losing money at an alarming rate now too which is music to my ears.

He got it on a 3 year lease at £1000 per month and did reflect on the fact that after 3 years and having spent £36000 he hands it back and has nothing. He has an old Alfa spyder in the garage and is sadly selling this but all is not lost as he is keeping his supercharged Jaguar XE for now.

Both my sons have Teslas and though impressive tech, I do find driving them a disconcerting experience with all info low on the RHS with flashing and audible warnings. Quite different from the experience driving other kit, including the EV Zoe.

Both company/work cars so financially ideal. Grandkids like them for playing games on the screen.

Saving grace - The Architect also has that damp Alfa Spider and is promised our Maserati in our wills!

Wow! £36k to have the use of the automotive equivalent of some white goods with lots of gadgets for 3 years? Wow! I cannot see the appeal.

Was there a downpayment on top of the £36k in monthlies?

Not sure, it was via a company called Tusker on a salary sacrifice scheme whereby the lease payment is taken each month before tax and NI is paid. I am told it is the same as the cycle to work scheme. At a guess I would think there has to be some form of "initial rental" and you are right "White goods" is a description I was going to use but edited it so as not to offend any EV fan.

It's funny I recently tested a Tesla S series (85D) in my quest for a super quiet car and it was a bit sort of bland. I mean loony fast but not really fun at any point. I have a BMW i3 which is less good by any objective measure than the tesla and yet is a bit of fun to drive, and the interior while less comfortable is somehow more attractive with some nicely made bits in it, can't quit put my finger on it. and the 3200 still puts them all to shame its just so much drama, and you never drive the 3200 and not really notice it, it dominates the journey, either with excitement, breath-taking handling, and noise or the risk or reality of it not working!

Architect’s Tesla: 3k down and 600 pcm for 3 years. Big reveal was the car rolling off a car transporter in the middle of the road

The risk / reality of my 3200 not working has been well and truly factored into my driving experience :)

Slight thread drift but I had my first experience last week of a shop refusing cash. Card only, apparently started in covid to ‘protect the staff’ and has carried on. Won’t be long before the big eye knows everything…

Most banks now charge businesses to pay cash in.
