Technical answer:

Charging a Lead Acid Battery that is filled with Suphuric acid produces hydrogen gas, this is a tube that connects the battery to the outside world and vents off the gas.

The battery has a small black connection for this and if memory serves is near the positve terminal, at the back of the 4200 battery...it's not critical but can prevent a build up and explosions...

I wonder what happens to the charging gases with a car cover on? It would permeate a cloth cover I guess, but might cause a nasty surprise with a waterproof cover, especially with the static they produce when removed. Paranoid?

I don't think there is much chance you will ever reach an explosive mixture under normal circumstances, not much to worry about.

PMSL - We will end up with Haz Area classifications next for a covered car with battery on a conditioner......
