Thinking about a Gransport

It's all relative from what you come from. I bet in isolation that CL600 feels like an A380 at speed.

I've had my GS for a week now. It's immense. Fast, looks amazing and sounds glorious! Prior to owning it, I used to get car envy if I spotted something exotic. Now....nothing, because I know I've got something pretty rare and exotic in the garage myself.....as Nike says, just do it!

Thanks MrCoop yours looks the colour combo of love.

I'm based in West Malling in Kent should anyone want to show me around a Gransport

Thanks
joe

I'm just down the road in Ashford, I'm about to start my search for a GS in earnest.

Alastair at ADG knows his stuff, and they tend to get some nice Masers.
VVS I find tend to be very expensive.
Nuvola have some nice cars.
And then there's Richard Grace. Most who have had dealings with Dicky don't have a bad word to say about him.

Keep your eye on the classifieds, as the good ones go quick. The ones that have been up for sale for a long while, there's a reason why. Normally avoid.
What colour are you after? As there are loads of black ones for sale at the mo.

Good luck in your search & lots of advise to be had here. ADG are good guys too as well as forum sponsors and being so close to you, they're well worth a visit. Giallo are right next door to the too and are a top indie servicing centre who are bound to have a few there too for you to have a look around at.
Have fun

I always tought of the 4200 range as cheaper to maintain than the 3200.
What does a service normally include?
I assume at those prices you are factoring in brakes and tyres?

its an overall costs if you follow the service schedule.... some will be cheaper years :)

Hi enzo, I think the E46 M3 will be quite a bit more expensive to run than the Audi sport range. I've got a mate with an RS4 and bar fuel its 'cheap'

For example an E92 is cheaper to run than an e46 aside from the fuel. Due to the nature of the s54 lump and the fine tolerances it really is a labour of financial love.

M tax is brutal!

Thanks all for he welcome.

sorry on my response, wasnt trying to put you off, the GS is an awesome car, you will love the GS, the sound, drive, power and the looks you get :) just starting the GS gives me a big smile

the GS will be just as much a labour of love and all the service costs will be forgiven when behind the wheel....

i wasnt even looking at a mas due to service costs but once i saw one and drove the GS, I went for a coffee to convince myself i couldn't afford it.... i have a very special GS :)

best of luck and look forward to hearing how you get on.

Best thing you can do is drive one, once you have I'm sure you will want one even more.
I agree that the brakes could be better but that's an easy upgrade and imo could do with a little more noise , that is also easy to upgrade .

Just one word of advice I got mine after driving a 4x4 truck. And I've spent a lot of money getting wheels refferbed bloody kerbs. I got mine from adg I found them good to deal with. And they sorted out a few problems I had when I first got her.

Thanks for the advice the M3 has the OEM 19s on it with a polished face so I'm well versed in staying away from the kerbs.

That's one expensive GS that one.............ADG had a great value bl\ck one last time I looked and a lovely blue one as well....There is a lovely Med blue colour one as well for sale on AT at a decent price as well......

Well worth giving Dicky GRace a ring from off here as he is well respected and supplied many cars to members. www.richardgracecars.co.uk

It seems the GS is only 42mm wider than the M3 so it should go in the garage easily especially with power fold mirrors!

No excuses not to throw myself into the search now!

Very different beast to the M3 Joe. I've had the s54 engine in an M3 CSL and a z4m coupe and the older one on 2 x z3m coupes. Personally, much as the CSL is revered, I found the z4m to be the better car, especially once subtly modded with CSL wheels, better suspension and brakes, GruppeM airbox, Supersprint etc. I loved mine and felt it to be a more special car than the CSL. I know i'm probably in the minority with that opinion!

The GS power delivery is different, with oodles more torque making accelleration feel more effortless than brutal. It's a special car and one that you will look back at and smile when you park it and one that you'll pop into the garage to look at when the weather is bad. The reaction from others is always good, people have a real respect for Maserati and will think you are a classy guy to own one !!

My advice after having owned two is this - low mileage is not necessarily a good thing and low mileage cars will cost more. They like to be used, not left sitting. for me, 35-40k miles at least and don't be afraid of a 65-70k miler if the price is strong. Black, grey, any blues are most desirable although just about any colour is good. Red has become popular and white is the king but you'll never find one. Some don't like silver but that's because it's hard to photograph well and actually is looks great in the flesh. This is a good tip as silver cars can be keenly priced. Yellow is horrible (that's for you MAF!!!) but don't worry as there are only 2 and not for sale !! Desirable options are LE spec which is full leather, xenons, upgraded (but still ****) hifi, heated seats, park sensors. Some have strong opinions on must have options, I don't agree generally and I would always buy the best car based on history and condition, not whether it has cruise or polished wheels.

Any one you want to buy, get it checked over if it's not from Dicky, Alastair, Nareman or someone like Giallo. Even if it is from them, it's not bad to still have it checked. The engines are strong as are the gearboxes but suspension can wear and parts can be expensive. There are known weak spots but nothing too dramatic. Clutches are known to fail but not as much as you'd think. You can attain a reading from them but it's not an exact science and shouldn't be relied on. A car with a recent clutch (inside 2 years) is worth seeking out if possible. They should last 40-50k miles unless driven in auto regularly or abused.

The SMGII box is not better or worse, just different. The CC box will seem agricultural at first in comparison but once you learn to take it by the scruff of the neck and be a little more bold, you will find it to be excellent. Settings can be adjusted, get friendly with you local independent and play with it once you're ready.

Good luck with the hunt.

Thanks Outrun brilliant advice from someone who has made a similar jump. I agree on mileage and I'm not afraid of owners either if it's been sold through reputable dealers. A low mileage one owner car is too much of a potential money pit if it's suddenly going to be used. I'll be looking for bills to back up the stamps as well. I hate this new trend of oh it's got the stamps it's okay!

Agree on inspection, I had my M3 up on the ramp to inspect the floor etc.

Thanks again
