Tick, tick tick...

Morning all

Ive noticed this morning a tick tick tick noise coming from under the bonnet. I also thought there was a slight squeal as I pulled away. Its possible the squeal was brake related.

Any ideas as to what the ticking is? I'm sure I've heard it mentioned on this forum before. There are no warning lights, the car seems to be driving great etc...

Appreciated as always

My GS/4200 used to tick tick tick at startup at towards the end of the oil life. Changing it sorted it out.

The squeal is probably your fan belt or even you spigot bearing. Obviously fan/aux belt is an easy fix, but with the tick, tick, tick is sounds more like its your spigot bearing and clutch thrust bearing. What is your mileage/percentage showing on your clutch?

The squeal is most likely spiggot bearing related (dont panic Mr Mannering) it happens on these cars when pulling way sharpish 1st and 2nd especially from a cold clutch , the bearing itself is only about £15.00 but it situated inches from the clutch and best replaced when the clutch is done , there are no known cases of it being detrimental just annoying , Maserati now have an improvement upgrade to eradicate this in future ,

Re the ticking noise, again a reasonably common distraction on start up , most likely top end tappet noise that will disappear when fully warmed up and the oil is fully dispersed, might be worth checking your oil level is correct , remember this is done with the engine running on a dead level flat surface or you wont get an accurate reading , note you might have to wipe and test the dipstick several times before all becomes clear , oil should be golden coloured and clear

Thanks for the instant replies gents. The oil was changed only 3 months ago and I did check the levels 2 weeks ago. I'll double check tonight when I get in.

Re the clutch - it was only replaced 2 years ago (10,000 miles ish) so should be fine (mine is a manual).

Its only started so I'll keep an eye on its progress over the next few days. I wouldopen the window when pulling away to listen properly - BUT - I'd get soaked with the water on the roof pouring in (how annoying is that?!!).

Cheers

Congratualtions You ve discovered the only really annoying trait of the 3200 4200 and Gransport coupes , luvvit my Missus gets soaked evertime she tries to smoke in the car , both the foibles you have mentioned have been asked many times so worth keeping an eye on things ,but not worth getting paranoid over .............its very easy with these cars to do that , they are really robust , more than you think , sounds like you are sensibly on top of things just keep a close eye if things start to get a little worse but first and foremost enjoy

I recon both noises are your clutch. I would plan to get is done, a tick, tick, tick noise is well known to be the clutch thrust bearing, and the squeal is most defiantly your spigot bearing.

10k miles for a clutch on a CC is about right, on a manual is low, but if the clutch had not been adjusted correctly, it would wear the thrust bearing, the spigot might never have been changed.

I'll look at my invoice - had this done at JCT 600 Maserati - so hope they would have done everything correctly. Like I say - its possible the sqeal may be the brakes, but I will keep an ear open (with window closed!).

You're right Loz, its easy to become paranoid with these cars. Loving her as much as I do - I want to ensure its all running correctly! I will indeed enjoy.

Frank the perameters have been lost so you will never be able to reset it, only to 0% wear.

I've been getting ticking noises, but my tech believes it is tappet related and could be that my oil (changed 5k miles ago) is getting too viscous / thin...thoughts?

JP, that could be the case in your climate, you will probably notice the oil pressure fall too.

Does it do it when it cold?
Switch the aircon on and off, and spray some water on the belts and see if it goes or muffles it, its worth a try, also if its one of the clutch bearings it should go when you select a gear/clutch loaded.

I thought fully synthetic oil was very very robust....and 5/6K on it won't made it degrade really......

Gents, this appears to happen after the car has warmed up after a spirited drive. It does not appear to be related to the transmission (clutch, gearbox, etc) as it still happens while in neutral and engine is turning...it speeds up as i increase revs, which leads me to agree with my tech regarding the tappets...

I agree P, 5k miles shouldn't do that much damage to oil, although we do have "unique" weather here with the heat and dust...

My car has also developed a slight leak around the engine crank seal...my tech says this is quite common on 4200s...

Otherwise, I just set the clutch PIS to 4.3 (mine was at 5.5) and it is perfect! We also tried the recommended 4.8 and 5.1 settings, but the 4.3, as recommended by the ML forum was just right...very smooth on take off and other than the shunt in 2nd to 3rd shift on full throttle, it is very very smooth...try it!
