"Torsion Damper" - purpose of heavy plate on 4200 gearbox?

I'm curious about the function of the heavy rectangular plate bolted to the underneath of the 4200 gearbox. On the parts diagram it's labelled "Torsion Damper".

I've been wondering why was it necessary to add a big heavy weight - it almost looks like an afterthought Apart from general vibration damping, I wondered if it might it have a specific role in smoothing gear changes - particularly on Cambiocorsa cars? Or does it have another vital function that I'm missing?

The car's designers were smart guys so I would be surprised if they added a big chunk of weight without good reason. If anyone can shed light on what it does I would be grateful. Thanks.

That’s exactly what it does, the inertia of the weight reduces movement during gear changes as well as potentially changing the resonant frequency of the assembly in terms of vibration.
