Turning down Larini-rears volume....

In contrast to most who look to increase the exhaust volume, I am wondering if it is possible/anybody has previously suppressed some of the sound from Larini rear boxes? Interested to know if anybody has experience of cutting open the rear boxes and adding additional baffling/sound deadening?

Since I switched back from Larini rears to OEM rears (Larini H-pipe still fitted), I've actually enjoyed being able to hear the engine, and I hadn't realised just how UBER-LOUD the car was with the Larinis on - well I had good idea though :)

So having gone out today for a spin to meet a pal who has Tubis on his Spyder, which volume and sound wise are pretty much like what I would like (they are a fair bit quieter than the Larinis), it made me think that something midway between OEM and unsilenced-Larini would probably sound very nice.

I may look to take them to an exhaust specialist at some point to get an opinion.

In the mean time the Larinis are stored away as I'll do this summer with the OEMs.

Can't believe I just read that....!

Well It wouldn't be difficult to do a halfway house to the OEM's if you did similar to Maverick/Spartacus and myself but instead used perforated pipe. Effectively taking out the pig tails inside and replacing them with straight sections of perforated, replace the wadding and Robert is you aunt Fanny's husband!

Hi John

I won't be selling them I'm afraid - am just inquisitive as to whether they can be cut open as I remember you did to some which I think were OEMs.

Mines Loud now I have the H pipe with the Sports back boxes.
How I make myself laugh like a small child making car alarms go off! :rofl5::rofl5::rofl5:

I think mine must be exactly the perfect tone to set alarms off.
Can do it in outside car parks as well as multi-story's. :D

I made some kids walking home from school jump yesterday.

The only time I've seen more heads turn as I drive past in town is when I had a transit with a squeaky fan belt

That's the issue I have with the Larini rears you see - they are just too loud with the H-pipe. The sound is perfect, just the volume too much. Hence wondering if the volume can be suppressed a little :shy1:

How long has your H pipe been in?

Mines been in a couple of weeks, however, I've racked up nearly 1000 miles in that time, and to be honest, it's quietening down, I guess that is down to soot etc filling joins and the like.
So whereas it was very shouty to start with. It is still loud, however, when on motorways and cruising, it's not as loud and droney as before.

The best of both worlds IMHO.

The H-pipe is fine with the OEM rears, it's obvious that it's not stock, it sounds very nice & purposeful on idle. When driving the ideal for me would be to have it mid way between stock and Larini rears volume wise, keeping the Larini sound.

My H-pipe is a Larini - I expect that there is a difference in sound between the Larini and forum pieces being they are probably made of different grade steel and perhaps slightly different design.

Swap with Mavericks back boxes then, sounds like a good way of achieving what you want.

Larini have just cut the price of their sports cats by about 40%. This and their X pipe have made a big difference to performance and sound. I kept the valved stock rears and I'm very happy with the set up.

Do you have a link? or is it via one of their stockists?

Mine were fitted by Autofficina who are an official stockist. My friend emailed them this week and this is the latest prices

Further to our emails regarding the supply and fitting of Larini Sports Cats and X pipe centre section, Larini have now advised that the Sports Cats are approximately £1,600 plus VAT (they have just decreased the price of this by over £600 which is good news for once, and the X pipe is £389.42 plus VAT plus a delivery charge of £30 plus VAT. There is a wait time of around 3 weeks for the Sports cats and the X pipe is available immediately.

To fit the system would be around 4 hours and our labour rate is £90 per hour plus VAT.

Sports not only improve sound but by getting rid of the restrictive flat pipe and secondary cat they make a notiecable difference in pick up and torque. Here is the official price before discount.
