Pothole (or rock) + darkness + speed, I suppose.
Unusual for it to be a rear one. But nasty thump and by the time I had stopped the sidewall was mostly off. Gloucestershire.
They only went on new in about October...

Everybody I talk to refuses to fit second-hand tyres bought off eBay or wherever, saying the liability is too much of a problem. Have others experienced this?

BUT, some of the same people (when I ask again wearing a false moustache) seem pretty happy with the idea of 'I have some tyres in my shed that I need putting on'.

That seems a bit odd, but I suppose if they choose to believe you, then 'I put the customer's own tyre on, at his request' somehow sounds better than 'the customer brought in a dodgy tyre, and I fitted it anyway'.

Makes a certain amount of sense. Just tell them the latter

Never had a problem. Steer clear of the high street names and go with a local company. After all they were just taken off of cracked wheels while you found replacements. ;)

No new Michelin Alpin's to be had anywhere in the UK until 20 March at the earliest.

New plan is to have my local tyre place take the crappy and very old P Sottozeros off my 19in wheels and put my oldish (one winter a few years ago) Sottos onto those rims, and put those wheels on the car, then think about a new Alpin and some summer tyres in April.

As it turns out, you can get 8 wheels/tyres into a QPV!

Well a big hand to @MarkMas for demonstrating that you can get away with not having a space saver!
I presume a front wheel will fit on the rear if needed?

But it looks like there's enough space for one of each anyway!
