ULEZ does nt make sense

Clean air zone to come into force in Birmingham on 1st June - they had a council official saying everyone will now want to come to Birmingham because of its clean air - yeah right . Take it from me those of us who live on the outskirts have little desire to go to central Brum these days unless essential . It will probably cause more congestion in the surrounding roads and hence more pollution not less - time will tell .
It just so happens that I m currently looking for a cheapish runabout and on the off chance I need to work in central Birmingham or go there for some reason I thought I should buy something ULEZ compliant - this is where it starts to make no sense eg - there are 10 year old diesel cars with £ 30 yearly road tax that are not ULEZ compliant whereas a similar petrol vehicle often the same make are up to £ 500 a year and classed as ULEZ compliant . I was under the impression the road tax pricing was based on emissions - am I missing something here can anyone explain this

My V12 Vantage is ULEZ compliant in London. Bit odd, really.

When the congestion charge started in London it made a huge difference, maybe for a year. Now I’m sure it’s as busy as it ever was. I don’t think ULEZ has made much difference, but if it encourages people to not buy diesels then it guess it’s slightly helping to improve things.

What he said. The ULEZ zones are there to improve air quality not CO2. There is a very strong argument for them. Last year London had worse air quality than at any time since the Clean Air Act. Of course much of this is due to two successive governments pushing diesels as a way to reduce CO2

It's all about the NOX now apparently and the harmful particulates rather than just raw CO2. Give the govt another 3-5 years and they'll yank the handbrake up to do a 180 to another nonsensical direction.

Brake dust and rubber from tyres is next nonsensical direction . Euro 7 on the horizon.

Buy a horse, Surely the most green way to travel locally ;)
I watched an episode of QI where they described the amount of pollution horses made in New York. It's more than you think and more difficult to get rid off. At least when it rains the air gets cleaner.

If they really wanted cleaner air in Birmingham they could do it overnight , nationalise the M6 toll and most of what's on it will cruise by rather than the most polluting stop start on the M6 from 6am every weekday

Charging a van the same as a 44t artic is why everyone stays on the M6 , £23 for the return trip

The same episode they were talking about horses in london in the peak of horse travel. Horses died and were left in the gutter to be collected at an average of around 20 a day.

What we really need is old school five star 105 octane fuel available from selected Sainsburys forecourts! ;)

Was 5 star really 105 octane, I put some of that in my Fs1e in 77 when the fuel shortage was on because that’s all that was left

It's nearly 20 years since that opened.

Fs1e. That brings back memories. What did you get out of it lying on the tank with 5 star in it
