£10k for a motorway speeding offence, that is going to cripple and bankrupt the majority!

No different from being sent to 10years in prison for not having a TV licence, is it? What's new. Does it happen in real life - no. Does it give judges more power to deal with the serial speeder or drunkard - yes. Win.

I can see the point for serial offenders....NO ONE wants drunk/drugged drivers on the road.

Level 3 and Level 4 fines should be swapped to reflect the proportionate risk impact I feel.

Btw, does anyone have any stats on whether or not speeding is the largest source of risk or cause for injuries and road traffic accidents? What's the bet that is is not the biggest risk factor? My guess it is the most likely source of extra income for the government...

Speed unfortunately exponentially increases the risk of an accident in first place, secondly, greater likelihood of serious injury and finally....more likely to die, need an actuaries spin this Mowlas!

And thats just to the driver whose doing it....never mind other road users

i know its going to give some people the rage, but if you want to die while speeding go ahead thats fine, having no care for fellow road users its all to apparent these days, its the people who are affected in the aftermath. I've seen people with kids on there laps, no seat belts, still using mobile phones and when I worked at a newspaper the photo's of accidents really made you think.
I would like to see zero tolerance with drink/drive, I think there a lots of things that need to be sorted with our roads/fines and training of young drivers, not sure of ages of some people on here but my lessons numbering about 6 was in London at night even had 1 on a skid pan and this was in 1980. todays roads are far, far different from these days normal family cars can easily do 100mph now.

sorry if offended anyone.

I do agree speeding is stupid, reckless and selfish but just not sure if most accidents and deaths are caused by speeding... here are some stats from ROSPA (Royal Society for Prevention of Accidents)...

http://www.rospa.com/faqs/detail.aspx?faq=298

They say:

"Inappropriate speed contributes to around 13% of all injury collisions, 16% of crashes resulting in a serious injury and 24% of collisions which result in a death. This includes both 'excessive speed', when the speed limit is exceeded but also driving or riding within the speed limit when this is too fast for the conditions at the time (for example, in poor weather, poor visibility or high pedestrian activity)."

It would be a quite complex equation to work out, all the variables, wouldn't mind seeing a proper study/report carried out by a few experts

A few observations from over 10 years of motorway commuting, about 120 miles per day:

10 years ago there was high visibility motorway policing and 'regulated' speeds (c70mph) with regular pileups; I used to see at least 3 or 4 motorway RTA's every week, often in the same locations.

10 years later the high vis policing has been replaced by unmarked cars and Highways Agency vehicles. Cruising speeds are significantly higher, but I don't see anywhere near as many crashes as previously, as there is little panic braking or significant bunching.

You are unlikely to 'educate' a tailgater or phone user even with the threat of huge fines. Their feeble brains simply can't cope with such detail.

Most commercial vehicle drivers are very good. Yes you get the odd white van man on a suicide/murder mission, or an artic driver who takes 3 miles to pass another truck at 55.0001mph, but by and large I don't have a problem with them. I do, though, have a problem with early morning drivers who concentrate more on their coffee than their driving.

Speed does not kill, but inappropriate speed can; I recently witnessed folk getting frustrated with a driver doing 30-40mph down an onslip that joins a very busy motorway!
