Vinyl wrapping Maserati key fob

Thinking of getting my key fobs wrapped in white to match my car colour - yes sad I know but I tend to drop and scuff my fobs and this may be a good way to protect them.

Has anyone done this or something similar? Does the wrap last and will it be tough enough?

Thanks

I can't imagine it would.

I always think the key is a bit of let down. My Alfa 166's key had the Alfa logo in full colour which made it look richer and the key itself felt more robust. I know the Maserati logo is monochrome, so they are constrained there, but the key feels plasticky and cheap.

We need Jonny Ive to design one :)

The fob is a embarrassment to the brand, they should be ashamed. Then I believe most fobs are a complete let down. AM has stepped up to the plate lately not sure about porkers or Ferrari not seen any of those lately.
Why more design is not put into them I have no idea, it's as important as the badge IMO. It should be a thing of beauty.
A client of mine wanted me to design carbon fibre covers what would slip over the old fob when me got his previous Martin but was low down on the list so it never happened.

Is that something you think could be done for the blue 4200 keys, Roger?

Would be a bit different, you'd need to see and get a report back from someone who has used one to see how it fairs in daily useage

My GTS key is a load of old crarp. It looks much better since I got the eye to which the fob fixes replaced and Miles very kindly sent a key-fob. But the actual housing falls way short what you'd expect from Maserati. Have any of you seen the Fiat 500 Maserati edition key fob? It's really nice, makes ours look, well, look as bad as they are.

Are the latest model keys any better?

Thanks for the feedback guys. Been doing some research and have been told by a few vinyl wrappers that due to all the curves in the fob plus general wear and tear through daily usage, the wrap will start to peel off and the thing will look a mess.

Two other options available:

1. Powder coating / painting
2. Hydrographics

Hydrographics would just involve dipping the fob casing entirely into the paint liquid and apparently it should form a durable bond that should last. Pretty reasonable as well and they can do all sorts of things from carbon fibre to metallic finishes with or without texture.

What do you guys think? Is it easy to get the key and electrical bits out of the fob pre dipping?

Here is a pic of a Range Rover fob in carbon fibre finish applied hydrographically -

....stick it in the hole and turn it. Job done.

Unless you are in the habit of wearing it on your belt or leaving it on the table in wine bars????????????????????????????

Have to agree bigbob!
If it worries you so much get a leather pouch that came with my then e46 BMW 3 series so the key is covered in leather when not in the hole!

Can't see a problem with the key myself.

You've probably taken better care of yours than the previous two keepers of mine, Bob: both look like they've bounced down the road once or twice. Still, I'd rather the key was a bit battered than the car.

They both came a bit scuffed and bashed! One is now resplendent with a shiny new fob, the other is still a more sorrowful looking sight.

Can I ask what you had to pay for a replacement - and presumably from a main dealer? Mine are well and truly 'distressed' and on one of them the silver bit you attach to your keyring is loose i.e. the key easily falls off.

I haven't replaced them. Lancaster was kind enough to keep an eye out for a key which came in for replacement under warranty and then took the silver bit out and glued it into mine. I could do with a second one now for the spare key. The fob was courtesy of Miles (emtee on here) who had a few kicking around.
