Popped in to Shiltech today and they'd swapped over the brake pipe. Here are a couple of pictures of the damage to the braided section. I really hope this is a one-off affecting just my car, but it's a simple check to make and so I'd advise you to take a quick look, particularly if your brakes are feeling spongy.

Thanks for those Miles....but basically if that section is properly secured, this problem shouldn't arise?

Hi P, it was properly secured in mine, held in by all it's retaining clips, etc, so there's obviously some play in the pipe that can allow it to fowl on the head cover without it popping the retaining clips.

No worries P, I'll PM Matt. I really hope it is just a fluke affecting mine, but for the sake of a post and some photo's it'll hopefully avoid anyone else missing it, as I don't even want to think of the possible consequences.

Great stuff Miles.......can't be too careful with 400bhp under your right foot and no brakes!!!

Sorry to hear the woes Miles , my worrying thought is what caused this , the retaining clips are quite robust so unlikely the pipe has moved under braking , therefore it must be the other item it was coming into contact with ( ie head cover ) for this to move so far would suggest possibly the engine mountings need replacing if there is too much flex on the engine under torque , worth investigating

...the plot thickens boys....................interesting Loz...............

Not wanting to scaremonger , really pleased there were no adverse consequences to Miles car , but there has to be a cause , Personally coming up to 4 years of ownership now and this is the first time ive come across this particular fault , quite common are the main oil hose , and steering hydraulic hoses going , so brake hoses certainly one that everyone should take heed of and check soon as , more so if your cars are the same age as miles or older or similar mileages ,

More i think about it , Im strongly leaning towards the possibility of engine mounting rubber degeneration ,

When i look tomorrow , if there's room to fit some kind of protective guard to the pipe , think thats the way i'll go then it will be easy to check if the guard starts to get rubbed against

Thanks for your comments and thoughts Loz, I'll mention this to the guys at Shiltech tomorrow, but I really haven't felt any engine shake. That's the sort of thing you really would feel when firing the car up, or under torque, but all seems smooth. Flip side is yes, there has to be something causing this and it's not like we've come across it before, so there's obviously something out of the ordinary going on. Regards, Miles.

Yes, better to diagnose whats causing it first......but then again...take precautionary action in the interim.

Will await your thoughts Loz.

I checked the hoses on my car a few days ago and there seems to be quite a lot of space (in masarati terms anyway, maybe 1cm or more) between the hoses and the engine. Can't imagine
how it would rub on anything... maybe yours were routed incorrectly or have something else routed which is getting in the way?
What about if the rubber weakens with time, would it expand enough (with the braiding?) to rub against the engine?

Really not sure B. As mentioned previously the car was at Shiltech at the time and the pipe blew whilst they were test driving it. I hadn't previously thought to check them myself, so I can't say with certainty either way, but Shiltech assured me that it was correctly retained in its clips. Glad yours is well clear though. Regards, Miles.

I tested mine on Friday, stuck some 10mm foam to the brake pipe with sticky velcro and coated the front edge with Hylomar gasket seal (its blue gel ) took it for a blatt up the road to see if the engine mounts flexed enough for some of the hylomar to rub off on the rocker covers and nope mines all sound even after a few wheels spins

Think Urby has the real answer to that one Frank , all in the cause of good diagnostic fault finding
