I prefer borescope as endoscopes are for generally for medical purposes, but yes same meat different gravy.

I sure they are interchangeable if you clean / sterilise them ;)

Whilst we like to think of our cars as exotic supercars, in the eyes of the law they are a mass produced 4 seater that are designed to be used by the masses on the public highway.

I'd think that the vast majority of us on here can understand what to look for and what the warning signs are. However there are an equal (probably greater) number of owners who wouldn't know where to find a "wishbone" let alone what it looks like!... so please tell me what other mass produced car needs a monthly inspection with a "snake cam" to check it's safe to use on the road?

Personally I find it completely unacceptable... I might be able to live and work around the issue, there are those who can't and might end up paying a very heavy price for it.

Mark

There seems to be a suggestion that the issues could partly be mileage related rather than age.
If wheels were falling off your Ford Focus at 50K what would the press be saying?
Wishbone is not a consumable like discs or shocks. It is an intrinsic structural suspension component and failure at 50-60k is a nonsense.
Our cars do much less mileage per annum than a Focus so potentially the part could fail at 4-5 years old if it was doing "average" miles.
The attitude of Maserati to this is shocking.

does anyone know how many 3200 / 4200 / GS cars are in the UK that would need looking at. perhaps this could be a way for Maserati to get the information needed.

According to how many left figures for the 4th quarter of 2014 the figures are as follows :-

Model ------------------ number taxed --------------------------- number sorn

3200 auto ------------------------- 199 -------------------------------------------------------79
3200 manual -------------------- 186 -------------------------------------------------------80
3200 assetto manual ---------- 14 ------------------------------------------------------- 4
3200 assetto auto --------------- 13 ------------------------------------------------------- 4
4200 cambio corsa ------------ 442 ------------------------------------------------------73
4200 GT ----------------------------- 129 ------------------------------------------------------30
Gransport -------------------------- 113 -------------------------------------------------------11
==============================================================
Total cars ------------------------- 1096 ----------------------------------------------------281
==============================================================

If the figures are accurate that means there are 1377 in the UK alone that have either already been affected or could be affected in the future by the issue.

I have no idea how much it would cost but maybe an open letter / advert in an Italian newspaper asking some pertinent questions such as why Mr Green isnt prepared to go for a drive in one of their own cars knowing there is a potentially deadly fault in the cars listed. If its the way to go forwards then I would chip in as I am sure many others would.

As far as his comment about matters of this nature stop with him is absolute tosh. Mr Green you work for the UK arm of an Italian company. You have a boss in the UK I have no doubt and they will also have people higher up the command chain in Italy.

Perhaps a call to Maserati UK's HR department would reveal who we need to complain too about Mr Green. Im sure somewhere along the line you answer to either Peter Denton or Harald j Wester or both.

Good man, just think of the numbers worldwide, this is a bit more than a fly in the ointment, Maserati could come out of this looking really good if they ever decide to take responsibilty!
Sorry! What was I thinking...........:excellent::battered:

Unfortunately they are part of the fiat group who have just been lambasted in the USA for not responding quick enough to recalls.........

Had mine up on a ramp the other day and checked front and rear and all seems ok.
However I am curious what the "revised" wishbones look like.
On the photos posted so far even the ones without issues seem to have what looks like a welding joint which could turn into a crack. Mine have a raised edge which is rectangular, if that makes sense, but either in excellent condition or I wondered if the revised part as there is no sign of any weld line.

Frankly I think the 'revised' part is simply more finished (as in there has been a greater attention to finishing the casting seam). I am no expert, though.

As I have said before I don't believe there has been a revised part just a different batch of wishbones made by a different outsourced company.

May have missed or forgotten in amongst all the contributions on here on the subject. Sorry.
Some have said they have the later wishbones. Just wondered what the visual difference was.

Updated to include both Spyder variations

If the figures are accurate that means there are 1616 in the UK alone that have either already been affected or could be affected in the future by the issue.

Some interesting numbers there, no wonder we don't see many of these cars out & about - they're all super rare

There's your name to contact...

"Scott Kunselman, Fiat Chrysler's recently appointed head of vehicle safety, said it is changing the way it manages safety to follow the industry's best practices. The safety system, he said, has been reorganized with added personnel. He now reports directly to CEO Sergio Marchionne. Previously the person in his position was three rungs down the organization chart from the chief executive"

Up on ramp again today, more bad news :(

Both rear upper arms split very badly, I've got pics but really what's the point, this is just silly now.

I'm guessing maserati are waiting it out till something serious happens, this is NOT a maintenance part, it's not a consumable, where the ramp is we used today they store loads of classic rollers, Astons, ferraris etc - many much much older and some equally high mileage to my 4200, and none with wishbones splitting..

I'll replace the uppers as soon as I can get hold of them (another fun conversation with eurospares Monday!) , as I couldn't let someone else take the risk, but as soon as it's done if anyone wants a very cheap 4200 let me know, I'm done with it, the idea of worrying about it constantly and having her inspected every few months is just not worth it for me. This is not a fun toy anymore it's just a headache. Insurance renewal up in about ten days so big decision incoming.

The mechanic and the owner of the storage facility both said call maserati surely they'll deal with it seeing as I've replaced the fronts myself and footed the bill, I tried not to laugh when they told me that.

Was hoping to drive her away in the sunshine today, silly me :(

On a serious note, vosa need to warn the MOT centres surely, this has to be a failure and a serious one at that, and they're all missing it because they don't know about it, partly because quite frankly it's a ridiculously unheard of potential fault in most cars.

Sorry to hear your news and agree re Vosa. I had mine serviced a few weeks ago and took in an image off this thread so they knew what to check for. In five months time I will do the same come MOT.
