Ways to buy

after selling my 4200, decision that I regret but I had to do it for practical reasons, I am looking for the next buy and the best channel to buy.

I am looking for a Touareg but also tempted by the new Quattroporte...for me Maserati remains the best and my separation will be not for long.

What about?
Copart
HBC
BCA

Copart and HBC are mainly crashed cars...not the right place for a Maserati although I have seen some bargains in the stolen recovered section. A nearly new Touareg went for 20.000£ last week.

BCA has a fantastic selection of Touareg and a nice Quattroporte... but I suppose prices are not far from retail? Online you can only bid as a trader but there are people offering their membership for few hundreds£

Do you have any experience/advice?

I bought a golf from BCA , it was OK but by the time I'd paid the buyers premium it wasn't any cheaper than buying privately where you get much more time to look a vehicle over

When I got there I bought a catalogue that was very conveniently printed on yellow paper where all the traders had CAP price guide catalogues printed on white paper so I was immediately identified as a mug to bid up

I'm not saying I wouldn't do it again but it'd have to be one of the ex mobility or private lease cars which looked mint but were commanding top money

Go and have a chat with a main dealer if you fancy a new QP. I guarantee you'll be very surprised indeed how much they might sell you one for! There are very good deals to be had if you know what you want and how to negotiate.

Auction prices for mainstream cars are generally very close to book trade prices, so after fees are going to be under private prices but not massively. It's different for Maseratis, particularly if they're more than a year or two old. The trade is generally very wary of them. They can go for several thousand less than private price, never mind retail. A 2007 QP GTS 4.2 with 59.5k miles (MA51ZER) went for £18k in December and was up for sale for £9k more at a small trader a couple of days later. A private buyer would have paid about £19k after fees.

A 2014 Ghibli V6D went for about £34k, a 2014 Ghibli V6S about £37k. Both straight cars from finance companies.

If you're brave, have the cash and know a fair bit about cars, auctions can be a great way to buy.

Further advice would depend on the car. The QP you mention has cosmetic issues including a rear bumper respray. But it's from a finance company, so probably being sold due to financial rather than mechanical reasons.

Used QP's are bargains...Top range GTS models seem to be loosing 50k over night at least...Not sure I would buy new but used they are good value...

Thanks for the advice.

I think for a Maserati I prefer to buy privately ideally someone from this forum. I know the car has been loved. the risk to buy at action and realise the car has a massive problem is big even if with my knowledge I should identify the problems in advance.

For nearly new leased cars there might be some savings to be made on BCA. Unless you need to fight with a private customer the price will be a trade one so a few thousand less than retail. I have a friend that gives me access to the gold membership so I can access the cars online and pay reduced fees.

I bought 3 year ago a ex Motability 8000 miles Touran on HBC. It was a bargain and a great car!

I got that email too. I liked the fact that the made sure to note that it was including VAT.

Won't be taking up the offer. They do have a very nice GC MC in the showroom. With an appropriately silly price.
