wheel refurb

Hi all

I've managed to kerb one of the front wheels. My youngest told be that I wouldn't be able to squeeze through the said gap and he was right!

If anyone can recommend a wheel refurb company in the north London area, then I'd be very pleased to hear. I'll be going for the standard silver finish.

Thanks, Peter

I am afraid I can't recommend anyone as its not my area but expect Dem can.

You should get both wheels done on the one side otherwise they will look different.

I pay £50 a wheel but London being London I would expect that to be more like £75 a wheel.

You are wise to get a recommendation from another member as there are some shockingly bad refurb companies out there that attract you on price and can simply smart repair it with a rattle can.

Hi Peter, I have had mine done 3 or 4 times and although i am nowhere near you, i would recommend getting them powder coated and avoid the mobile outfits and the companies that spray paint. The powder coating is much tougher long term.

Apologies for slightly hijacking this thread but what is the perceived wisdom on wheel colours. I have a Sebring Blue 3200 on standard Silver 10 spokes and just about to send them to be refurbished/powder coated at Phoenix in Bristol but it has been suggested that I should consider going for slightly darker than original ( ie similar AC smokey silver). I think they will not stand out so much but would be a move away from original colour - has anyone gone this route. Thoughts?

The factory finish is wet paint the colour and then powder coat the lacquer. To do the job properly the wheel needs to be acid dipped, checked for run out and, if needed, straightened. I used to have a company that would do all this for very good money but they consistently missed a bit of paint/lacquer on the inside rim - this meant that over time corrosion would occur and the job would need to be done again. The paint was missing because they'd hang the wheel with a hook. I asked them to change and offered more money but they weren't interested.

Now we sub out all our wheel work to Lepsons - they do a first class job but it's not cheap.

Sorry Davy can't agree with that. Wet paint is the factory finish and any wheel that gets curbed will damage, be it powder or paint.

Agree with previous post about strip inspect and correct any defects. Unless you are the only driver and are certain the wheel has not had any impact, it is false economy to just paint. I use pristine wheels (Woburn) who have straightened my wheels each time they refurb. In fact they call it rebuild / correction. These are 20" speed lines too no the GS baking tray material. About £100 each wheel versus 50 for face paint. Don't want to look a clown do you :D

OK interesting, Maybe i was unlucky with the wheel paint people, and lucky with the local powder paint place? i found the paint finish was brittle and shattered on impact and you lost a lot of paint around the point of impact, and the lacquer too, where the powder finish the damage was more localised and i could touch up minor scratches more easily. I will try paint finish again perhaps :)

Sounds plausible Davy, my brother powder coated his wheels several times as the lacquer kept chipping off like you said your painted ones did so bodgery is present everywhere :(

I'm sure being a business you get business rates. However, I got 10% off just for saying I would recommend them on here.

I have used Lepsons and they have a deserved reputation for doing a good lasting job. Recently used Rimtec, also in Kent, for a full strip, curbing repairs and powder coat - delighted with their customer service (you can leave car with them for free or get slave wheels for free if getting all 4 wheels done (and if they stock them for a Maser)) and finish and fact they were c.40% cheaper.

Lepsons has been recommended highly by a number of people. I have one wheel which needs straightening. When I get round to getting them all off then Lepsons will be the place for me. Plus they collect.

We use The Wheel Specialist at Cheshire Oaks, they're excellent as they are at their main branch in Manchester. The problem is as they're franchised, they're only as good as your local shop.
