Why does my QPV go clank?

Can anyone identify what the clanking noise I am getting might be? I have had the car up on a ramp and nothing seems to be adrift.

I get a strange mechanical clanking noise when I go over Gloucestershire potholes at low speed, especially the second pothole in a run of several. It seems to be coming from underneath the passenger side, and somewhere near the middle of the car, but it is hard to be sure. Sounds like two fairly big but fairly thin metal plates clanking against each other. Might be suspension, but maybe exhaust or something. It's the sort of noise you would get if you dropped one of these on to another one:

It’ll be the two things that are hitting each other when you go over a speed bump that are making the noise ;)

If you can’t see anything adrift then perhaps a broken spring?

I had a similar thing in Mrs. 1963’s Merc SLK. I would of sworn it was exhaust related. It even went away for a while sometimes. It was a rear spring broken right in the bottom cup so almost impossible to see.

Potentially worn bushings on the suspension control arms? That’s what is was when I had clanking.

Or perhaps the rubber bushes on the anti-roll bar?

What sort of mileage have you done since the control arms/bushings were replaced or, if not replaced, overall mileage?

Matt took apart and replaced lots of suspensiony-thingies only in April, but I will have to look at the bill to see what was involved.

Cover plates loose or rusted out and rattling.
Exhaust heat shroud
Exhaust rubber failed and Exhaust hitting body
Piston ring stuck in one of the cats
6th gear flying loose around the box
variator in the sump
Spring a good contender
Loose wheel
Disintegrated donut.

Some of these may be silly....... or Not!

It has now started going 'spoing' from time to time. I think a trip to Hampshire may be needed....

Nah, on this occasion it was gently driving off a raised bit of pavement. So maybe a spring after all.
Did you not inspect them when it was on the ramp? Thought that was too obvious. Look for the bottom two rings sitting on top of each other….snapped

My local guys had it on a ramp (twice) and found nothing. So it's either something well concealed or they are idiots, I suppose.
