YouTube Adverts

Does anyone know how YouTube works as far as adverts are concerned.

I have various videos on there and having viewed them on a mates phone (so not logged on) see they all have adverts on them.

It this standard and who makes money from them as I certainly don't -

I've no idea but would like to know too. I think in 1000 views I've earned less than a dollar.

I think if you get 100k views you start earning money.

Ads are standard and Google takes the dosh. When you put videos on YouTube you sign away your soul, and unless you're a YouTuber with a following of millions then forget ever making any money. As Matt said, there's a threshold beyond which you earn the tiniest slither of sod all.

Thanks, mine are not intended to get huge viewing numbers - just sharing the odd video with like minded people and was hoping I could turn the adverts off. I suppose they are a necessary evil if I share on YouTube - might look to find another way.

Incidentally my son posted a video of him failing a BMX trick and it got lifted by one the hundreds of "fail" videos he earnt between $80 and $200 a month for about 6months off the back of it.

Looking into it a bit more there are also non-monitized platforms that you don't get any credit at all for. You can stop the videos being played on them but I've no real idea which platforms they are so will leave it as is.

I'd remove the ads altogether, but there's always the chance that something will go viral and make a fortune. Its a bit like the lottery. You know, in your heart of hearts, that its unlikely but that slim chance draws you in.

Doing more digging on the YouTube site I came across this:

As of April 6, 2017, channels that have fewer than 10,000 views cannot run ads on their videos

There's also a link to a blog entry.

So no one should see ads on my videos, the stats show that they are still being served though so I don't know what's going on. I'm going to disable the adverts until I get to 10k views. Looking at the stats it'll be a race between me getting to there and the Alfieri arriving
